First Look: Pennies for iPhone

Pennies is a new iPhone application from the same people who brought you AppZapper and Disco. Pennies is a simple, yet beautifully designed, application to manage your monthly budget right from your iPhone or iPod touch. When you first launch the application you are presented with a "This Month" budget screen where you can set your monthly budget, see how much you've spent, see top expenses, and get some statistics.

In the "Expenses" tab you can add, edit, or annotate your expenses. When you add an expense, you can select a category and enter an amount. You can choose between 10 categories including: general, food, electronics personal, and groceries. When you enter an amount and save the expense, it is automatically deducted from the budget and the "fuel gauge" moves towards the "empty" line on the month screen.

Overall, this is a very nicely designed application that offers a handy solution for managing your budget on-the-go. However, it would be nice to have a desktop application on the Mac that this app could sync with. Perhaps via a WiFi link, like 1Password for iPhone -- maybe it could connect with ChaChing? Still, for $2.99, this application is definitely worth the price. Pennies (iTunes Link) is available right now via the App Store.

See, I like this precisely *because* it's not too complex - I want something that I can put entries into fast, with some general categories, so that I can see how much money I'm going through. I don't need or want a full forensic analysis available on my phone, just enough to know whether the month will run out before the money.

Avoid this one I paid the $2.99 and could have used to instead buy the WAY better Budget app that is super customizable and feels like more thought was put into it.....

They should have absolutely thought of custom entries poor design :( . They made it too vague and general.

Looks like a great application but I refuse to buy another application from therse developers. They create an application, reap the rewards and move on, very rarely updating them. They then leave there customers crying for fixes and features.

Unlike a bunch of whine artists I see here I emailed him, within 12 hours I got this response to a request for categories I could create myself.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the email. We're planning on adding more expense editing functionality in a future free update.

I was wondering about export capabilities too and so I wrote designbyaknife.com and asked the question. Here the feedback I received from them today

"Thanks for the comment. Right now we are working on an update that will include the ability to export a csv file to your mac."

You know what would make this app totally amazing? Integration/synchronization with http://www.mint.com. I haven't heard of Mint having any kind of API to allow this, but still - would be pretty awesome if you could.

mr. O

Screw integration, I'll just wait for the inevitable Mint app...entering in the pile of expenses my family makes each month ain't gonna happen on an iPhone.

Again a nice app which totally ignores all the man users outside of the USA...! :(

Just add a few localizations for other languages, add at least the Euro as an alternative for $ and your audience increases significantly...! But as usual the developers keep ignoring the rest of the world...

Okay, I take part of my comment back, since it actually does support the Euro (and a few other currencies) at least...! My bad...!

Still I'm really bummed that basically none of the devs seem to bother localizing their apps...! That's quite a dealbreaker...

I've only seen the movie, but this is one of the best-designed interfaces I've ever seen, anywhere.
