Color iPod
MacOSX.com seems to be patting
themselves on the back for this one:
Our sources have confirmed the next generation iPod will have a color screen. The new iPod will not be much different in form and function from the current models, but the primary difference is the color screen. Other details about the iPod are scetchy on our end but the fact it will be color is not up for debate. We are sorry we don’t have more information to provide or details concerning the screen itself, but when it does come out or other rumors abound of it, just remember you heard it here first.
I’ll definitely remember I heard it there first, and will keep asking myself why it matters? Yes it’s cool the iPod
is going to have a color screen, but really, what digital device with a b/w screen doesn’t finally get a color one?
Cellphones, PDAs, everything that was once b/w is now color so it would only make sense that a future version of the
iPod would also be colorized. Not only that, but since the iPod was released people have been speculating what might be
next - video, audio input, and color screens have all been talked about. Now, if they new for sure that next version of
the iPod came with a feature to cook my dinner for me, or go grocery shopping for me, that would be news I’d be excited
about.
Also, until Apple makes an official announcement it’s pretty bold to say a rumor is confirmed and not up for
debate.

I read that announcement too and kept wondering "why would I want color?" I suppose that someday I could enjoy watching a 2.5" version of Spiderman or Lord of the Rings, but for the current iPod functionality, I never look at the screen anyway so why would I care if it's color? Weird...

Displaying embedded cover artwork. Everything I rip gets ID3 cover artwork.

The Discovery Channel Store sells a mp3 player that also plays mp4 video. Maybe the quality of an iPod video player will be similar to that of this player.

Not sure why MacOSX.com thinks they have anything special -- it was reported back in March that the 4G iPod would have a color screen.

To quote Henry Ford near the end of the era of silent pictures, "Why the hell would anyone want to actors *talk*?"

Movies would be fine but the rip time to a form any handheld can play is to much for my meager patience. Maybe if it had TV quality output to boot though... forget it... Make Me Dinner!

I keep hearing that the 4th gen ipod will have a color screen that will allow you to preview photos, and it will enable you to connect your ipod to a TV to watch video. My question: Will it display video on its own screen? If not, it could be a bit of a misstep for Apple. iRiver is coming out with their PMP-120 40GB video/audio player in July (supposedly), and I know that many gadget freaks like myself would like to be able to watch video on their device as well (e.g. standing in line, on public trans, etc). Any news about this would be appreciated.

i bought myself a 4g 2 days ago, and it does not have a colour screen. but i have noticed that some of the text etc seems to have an 'anti-alias' effect around it sometimes, which denotes various shades of colour. but, since there has been no word on wether it does have a colour screen or not, and that apple are saying there is more to the new ipod then they are telling us - the new ipod is the first one to have a different colour on each side of its packaging box - and note the brightly coloured advertisments everywhere for it. colour colour colour seems to me what they are screaming. perhaps in a firmware update, it will be enabled.

Anyone believing that the next iPod will have a color screen or be a video player needs to go get a phone book and find the nearest mental ward to check themselves into. In one of his more recent comments: http://www.ipodlounge.com/ipodnews_comments.php?id=P4170_0_7_0_C Jobs offered the now well-known line "It's the music, stupid." In an interview on this same topic he went on to explain that the iPod is designed to do one thing, and do that one thing excruciatingly well: play music. Why? Because music is what Jobs called something like a 'secondary activity;' you can pay full attention to it or listen to it in the background virtually anywhere. Cleaning the house, walking the street, riding the bus or riding a snowboard.
If you want a handheld video player go out and get one.. there's a boatload of em out on the market. (If you can even call it a market.. I've never heard great things about consumer interest in these.) www.archos.com has been around for a while and apparently iRiver is creating a lot of buzz with their new 'PMP' (Personal Media Player?) here: www.iRiverAmerica.com.
If you want the world's greatest digital MUSIC player go snag an iPod.
