.Mac reinstates Virex download for members with new version 7.5.1

download virex

Dave the Triffids over at MacSlash writes: ”Virex 7.5.1 is now available for download from the .Mac members area: Network Associates completed its beta testing of this upgrade earlier this month. The new version includes “active scanning” and “automatic eUpdate” functions, with options for scheduling scans and updating the virus definitions. Back in August, Apple offered Virex 7.5 to .Mac members, but had to pull that version from the site when it crashed a number of users’ Macs on booting. Since that version, the mailbox scanning function has been removed, and a bug fixed in the installer where it checked for the existence of competitor anti-virus products.”

For those who think anti-virus software for the Mac is a racket, keep in mind that although your Mac may be immune (so far) to the most damning viruses to date, your Mac can still be an “enabler” for many nasty viruses. If you exchange MS Word documents, for example, with Windows users and you receive an infected document and forward it on to a Windows user, that virus didn’t hurt you but the recipient will be infected unless they have taken precautions themselves. Now think about that for a minute. The person you sent that document to uses Windows… they have already proven they can’t be trusted to make the wisest choices when it comes to computing :) Do them a favor and protect them from themselves. Log in to your mac.com account today and grab the new Virex update.

Thank you so much for your hilarious comedy piece ".Mac reinstates Virex download for members with new version 7.5.1". I loved how you slyly slipped in that part about Mac users needing to help Windows users with their virus protection. What a knee-slapper! I'm still rolling in laughter! Here's some more good ones "Why doesn't Apple make Target Disk mode cross platform compatible?" "Apple biggest blunder PCs that crash when they sleep" or... "Do your PCs friends a favor: Stop making DVDs with your iLife suite".

I protect myself from viruses by choosing to use a Mac. It is not my responsibility to protect others from their own ignorance or carelessness.

I spend about half my computing time on Macs and half on PCs. I am religious about keeping my protection up to date on my PC. I have no security or virus protection on my Macs and no intention of buying into any of the currently shipping programs. If a PC user's problem is that they are getting infected by a virus from a Mac user, then odds are they're already infected via some email-transmitted threat and the virus from the Mac will make no difference. It's kind of like being thrown in the ocean without a life vest and being worried that your shoes are getting wet. You have bigger problems. Speaking as someone who uses PCs, I say if a PC user in this day and age doesn't know enough to keep their own system protected then it isn't my job to worry about it. Besides, doesn't Word have built-in Macro checking? Word macro viruses aren't the threat they used to be. And what good is virus protection that doesn't scan mailboxes?!?
