Headless iMac to ride to market?
Could this be the uber-low cost Mac every pundit and their Wintel-weaned cousin has been waiting for? Apple is
expected to announce a $499 G4 iMac at Macworld
Expo in just a couple of short weeks. $499? Yowzah, I bought an iPod at that price last year.
We’re looking at likely a 1.25GHz processor, 256MB RAM, 40-80GB hard drive, the typical connectivity
(USB/Firewire/ethernet/modem), and a combo optical drive with support for Airport Extreme, VGA and DVI. Apparently, the
new Mac is ‘incredibly small,’ with a height approximating the 1.73” Xserve height. That’s slim, all right.
So is this it? The ‘killer machine’ that will gobble up hordes of frustrated Wintel users who either have no interest
in waiting around for Longhorn or haven’t the first clue what a Longhorn is? Not idly have some decreed that
2005 will be the year of the Mac.

I really do hope this rumour is accurate - and it'd be particularly nice if the headless mac has some sort of Tivo-style functionality. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I don't mind the limitations Apple has put on your ability to upgrade the newer hardware, as long as there are plenty of of the standard plugs. Multi USB so you don't have to have a hub. Firewire would be very nice - imagine a little unit like this you could use for your home multimedia, connected to your iPod, etc... it has so much potential - please oh please. :-)

As badly as I want a headless Mac, I really am sceptical that it will happen. If it is announced in January, then I don't know how I will wait for it to be actually released. I'm certain my work would be willing to upgrade my ancient PC workstation to a $500 mac, it would be so nice not to have to use my personal iBook at work and worry about it being broken or "borrowed".
