InfoWorld Columnist Bets on IT Adoption of Apple

Oracle Logo

Judging from the reaction to my last post about Oracle, or should I say lack of reaction, Oracle may not be TUAWers favorite subject, however, Oracle is a huge player in enterprise computing. Tom Yager, technical director of InfoWorld’s Test Center, welcomes Oracle to OS X server (a little after I did) and goes further than that.

As of late Tom has become a real Apple booster, recommending many of Apple’s enterprise solutions like XServe, XSan, and XServe Raid. Tom thinks that Oracle coming to the Mac is just the thing that IT Admins need to make them look into having a few XServes in their server rooms. Tom also thinks that in a few years time there will be more Mac admin jobs then there will be people to fill them.

I am not so sure about OS X Server just yet (SMP on OS X is still immature), but the XServe RAID is a mighty sweet machine, at half the price of the Dell/EMC equivalent. My company is using two XServe RAIDs for production Oracle databases, hooked up to Sun servers (using Apple Fibre Channel HBAs). Oracle is recommending the XServe RAIDs, and indeed using them for its own internal IT deployments.
