No photos of photo connector for iPod

iPod Photo

We didn’t get a photo of the new iPod Camera connector, but Apple VP Greg Joswiak was kind enough to at least throw us a description of the $29 accessory: “a small white plastic device, similar in appearance to a small docking station, that has a cable for connecting to the iPod and a USB port for connecting to a camera.”

White plastic? We’re shocked!

The device is going to work with earlier iPod photo models as well as with members of the new product line. After loading in photos to the iPod via the connector, the images will be viewable immediately on the device itself; however, oddly, you won’t be able to view them on a TV until after you’ve synced it first with a Mac or PC. Does that strike anyone else as strange?

As far as I know the iPod photo uses thumbnails to display the images on the iPods screen and on TV, not the real picture. I guess this thumbnail is created when you import the pictures on Mac or PC, and not on or by the iPod (I think you can even choose if you want to import pictures and thumbs or just the thumbs). When you transfer pictures from a camera to the iPod these thumbs are not created, perhaps this is the reason, why you cannot see them on TV... Just a guess and not very convincing I think ;-)

It's one thing to copy a file from one source to another. It's another matter to import a file into a program. I agree it would be nice, but I think it's a lot to ask of the little ol' processor in the iPod to run an importing app.

Do not take me to seriously. I think: The iPod does not carry your jpgs in full size. It only carrys a smaller version. Showing a full size jpg on a normal tv (not hdtv) would only resulting in seeing a little part of the jpg. Like the upper left corner. Once again I am just speculating... :) have a nice day:)

I could really see this appealing to photographers / photojournalists in a big way.

A lot of camera's use special connectors, like USB mini-B and even some proprietary connectors rather than normal USB. If Apple just made it a cable they'd cut out a lot of cameras it could work with.

Very strange, but then again it also strikes me as strange that the functionality wasn't built into the iPod itself so we just need to carry a cable around to connect the iPod to a camera, rather than a whole dock-like thing.
