Freeware February: VLC media player
Every once and awhile I come across a video file that refuses to play in Quicktime. I try to
coax Quicktime into being more cooperative, but more often than not I must seek out another way.
That other way invariably is VLC, an open source video client that hasn’t
balked at anything I have thrown at it. My favorite feature? The full screen viewing option comes in very handy when
watching those Battlestar Galatica clips that I have (just some clips
that I am holding onto for archival purposes).
Go check out the features list and then
download VLC, I think you’ll like it.

VLC is what I had been looking for. I had made a snap decision to buy the gericom DVD burner from Aldi Stores. It didn't come with Mac software. So searched the net and found Dragon Burn (cost 20) and now this. Both work well - brilliant!

February 27 2005 at 6:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI love VLC. I came across a plug in folder online once that turns the look of VLC to a real nice brushed Aluminum look. I can't remember what it is called though. If Anyone else knows, please post.

But I don't know if Mplayer can handle Real-formats, because I refuse everything that comes from these guys or has to do with them. VLC is in fact a very good player in my opinion.
February 27 2005 at 12:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell I love VLC for its ability to play Region 3 DVDs on my Powerbook. Disable Apple's DVD Player. Stick in Old Boy, open VLC and run disc. Voila.
February 27 2005 at 12:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've found that MPlayer OS X can play more files than WMV (especially if you build your own copy from source, because then you get the latest Real codecs - use DarwinPorts to make it easy)

February 27 2005 at 10:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnother caveat... VLC cannot handle "WMV3" files, which I believe is the latest Windows Media format. Neither can it play anything from Real. Actually, if anyone knows of any players which can handle these formats on a Mac, please post it here.
