Fit more music on your iPod shuffle

iPod shuffle

This is a cool tip that I think I heard about once upon a time, but which quickly slipped out of my brain. In case the same happened to you, I thought I’d point to it here.

You can set iTunes to automagically convert high quality songs into 128kbps AAC files, so you can squeeze more songs into each square inch of the shuffle.  Here’s how: ”Connect iPod shuffle, open the iPod Preferences dialog, and click the iPod tab. Click the check box next to ‘Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC for this iPod.’ Then click OK.” This also leaves the songs in the higher format on your Mac.

Pretty cool. Saw this on my friend Jason Ball’s site; he found it in yesterday’s Apple enews.

It is a good feature, but I wish you could change the conversion options (eg convert to 160 kbps VBR mp3)

This does indeed work, but remember that since it's converting on the fly, the lenght of time for music transfer will be extended. some folks in the Apple forum were complaining at how slow the transfer but that was due to their library having more files greater than 128k music files. But it is a worthwhile feature, because it doesn't create duplicates to clutter up your music library.

Oh, and does it work for non-shuffle iPods? I guess that's the real key for me.

Will this work for Apple Lossless -> 128 kbps AAC? How ironic is it that I have been lusting after a feature like this ever since reading about Apple Lossless when it was right under my nose the entire time? Only goes to show you, most times you think some Apple software is limited and missing some features you really want, they're usually just tucked away somewhere out of sight to avoid confusing the unwashed masses.
