Mossberg on Apple's Camera Connector

grandpa waltWalt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal writes this week about New Ways to Store and View Digital Pictures. Included in his coverage is discussion of using Apple's new(ish) $29 Camera Connector used in conjunction with an iPod photo, noting "The Camera Connector is as simple as the device it complements, and we didn't have any trouble using it."

However, he does note that the other device reviewed, the Kodak EasyShare Picture Viewer, though not as effective in its execution might be a better choice for someone working within a tight budget and not already in possession of the over-$300 iPod photo.

Problem is, the iPod Photo connector is dog slow. I don't even remember the speed, but when I calculated it out it was to the tune of tens of minutes to empty a 1GB CF card. How many people here: A) Take enough photos that they need a way to store their CF cards. B) Have two high capacity cards, so they can shoot while the first one is being copied to the iPod. C) Are going to shoot not so many images that they drain the iPod's battery flat. I have heard stories on dpreview of short battery life with the camera connector. People who shoot enough images to need a device like this are likely using high framerate DSLRs, and an iPod is wholly inadequate for transferring a few thousand images quickly.
