Apple opens The Studio in Chicago retail store

the studio logoKesey noticed something new at the North Michigan Avenue Apple Store in Chicago, so he emailed us about it like a good TUAW reader should. It seems Apple has a new help desk to help creative types overcome artistic roadblocks.

"The Studio is the creative hub of the Apple Store. Whether your interest is photography, moviemaking, music or everyday use of your Mac, our team of Creatives can help you. They’ll teach you one-on-one how to re-touch photos, compose music and make Hollywood-style movies. Or how to make a logo or design a slick letterhead."

There's no mention of cost, but there's also no real info other than what I posted above, so it may or may not be free. I'm going to guess that is is free and that the help you get will consist of things like "What you need to do to make that work is buy this application/upgrade/peripheral..." Then again, I could be wrong. I hope I am.

There's no mention of the Studio on the Apple SoHo website, so this may be a Chicago-only thing for now. It's not the same thing as the Studio Series are paid, hands-on training classes. Have you noticed anything similar at your local Apple store?

PS to Kesey - your observation on the resemblance between Apple's The Studio logo and Microsoft's Xbox 360 logo did not go unnoticed :)

The Chicago "Studio" space seems to have replaced the block of terminals that served as a public access cluster on the second floor. (Was it called internet cafe or something?)

I dropped by today and had questions about how to back up my Mac, and about the new thumbnails in Pages, in this week's update to iWork 1.0.2. For free, they answered the first question but did not have the new iWork loaded yet. So . . . bottom line: it ain't limited to creative stuff like music, videos and graphics! - Dan Ashley

I received one of those emails today, too, for San Francisco. Didn't see the date, but I imagine they're rolling it out simultaneously with Chicago.

Thanks for setting me straight, guys! Learn something new every day... I wonder why The Studio isn't more prevalent?

The Studio premiered at the opening of the Pittsburgh/Shadyside Apple Store. I was there... and it's really cool. There are paid Studio series and there are always people there if you have questions. http://www.apple.com/retail/shadyside/week/20050522.html They're the items in red. http://homepage.mac.com/ckelley04/.Pictures/Photo%20Album%20Pictures/2004-09-04%2010.08.38%20-0700/Image-A647CDBEFE9311D8.jpg for a photo of the Studio there.

Sounds like a good idea, and something that Apple should have done sooner. Will more and more professionals headed toward Apple, it makes sense that it offer professional picture/movie/music help for novices.
