MenuMeters Update
Laurie covered MenuMeters as part of Freeware February back in . . . er, February, but the other day, someone in the comments to one of my posts asked what the little graph and arrow thingy was in my menu bar, and I neglected to answer.Fortuitously for that TUAW-reader and commenter, the recent update yesterday of MenuMeters reminded me of the comment and gave me the opportunity to post about it here. MenuMeters version 1.2.1 is freely available under a GNU General Public License, and is a very useful tool for monitoring your system's behavior. Think Activity Monitor meets menu bar.
MenuMeters can display a CPU Meter, Memory Meter, Disk Activity Meter, and Net Meter in your menu bar with more detailed information via drop down menu. You can customize which meters you want displayed via the MenuMeters Preference Pane which is installed in your System Preferences. I've included a picture of the Memory Meter along with this post.

I LOVE MenuMeters. I've used since it came out on various hardware and OSX versions. I'm one of the old-time computer users who prefers all the blinken lightenz. I've always appreciated Apple's hardware designs but desperately missed the lights that tell me just what's going on inside the pretty box. I'm even dismayed that current hard drive manfacturer's have removed the LED interface from drives. This comes after they removed the feature where read and writes were differentiated by LED as well.
MenuMeters does a terrific job of giving me back some of my sanity. I use the CPU meter to identify when some task has gone awry. I use the Net meter to identify possible spyware/trojans (or any other background network activity) and to identify network problems. I used the HDD indicator to let me know when my drive is being accessed - both read and write.

CKS, Thanks for the follow through. That was my post and I REALLY appreciate the thoughtful response and the pointer to Laurie's previous review. I'll take a look at it. Sounds interesting.
