Apple developer: 'I've finally been Microsofted!'

I heart RSS Some people told me to stop over reacting when I suggested that Microsoft might have taken a page from Apple's browser strategy. 'All browsers look alike,' they said.

Jens Alfke, a developer on the Safari RSS team, seems to agree with me. Who better to have on your side in this particular argument? He feels like he has been 'Microsofted,' and he isn't just talking about the RSS button. His advice to Windows users chomping at the bit for this feature? Pick up a Mac and the future of the Windows platform can be yours today!

Gee... I messed that up... after the "However," I meant to add "if I misdescribed how Safari and/or Tiger handles RSS, or that it is a system service, I retract's all my comments and stand corrected.

You know, I may be a lowly PC user, but I think all of you Mac fans are missing the point. I think RSS is going to be integrated into Longhorn itself, independent of Internet Explorer itself. As in the user can set a list of RSS feeds they want to subscribe to in the OS, and any program that wants to can pull this data up and use it, put it in their own interfaces, and what not. I do not think there is an equivalent to this in Tiger i.e. I believe NetNewsWire has to ping for its feeds separately from Safari or other programs, as opposed to hooking into an OS provided service. However, I believe that Internet Explorer having access to this data store is the *least significant* part of the announcement.

Instead of developing Longhorn, Microsoft should just buy Tiger when Apple is finished with it. The release date wouldn't be affected, and Microsoft's code jockies could spend their time making Microsoft Office (even more) bloated and less user friendly!
