Sneak peek: Dashboard enhancements in OS 10.4.2

dashboard_iconApple Insider reports on a rumored feature of the upcoming 10.4.2 update of Tiger, namely a Dashboard manager. Since Dashboard's introduction, a number of third party widget managers have sprung up. According to Apple Insider, "...the 'More Widgets' button [currently] located to the far right of the Dashboard dock has been renamed 'Manage Widgets.' Instead of scrolling the dock to reveal the next dozen or so widgets installed on the user's system, the function launches a completely new widget manager that itself resembles a widget."

This is good news, as navigating to where the widgets live is not fun. I'm rather addicted to downloading and installing widgets just to see what they do, and the result is a pile of widgets I'll only ever launch once. A built-in feature like this would be most welcome.

I'd like a way to keep the odd widget live when Dashboard shuts. I assume that'll happen at some point?

Just a comment, as it appears AI is confused - "More Widgets..." does not scroll the widget list, it opens Safari up to the Apple Widgets download page. I can't see Apple removing this functionality, but adding another button similar to it is most certainly not out of the question (and would be welcomed by many).

It's not THAT hard to navigate to where the widgets life. Simply place the widget folder in the left hand column of the finder window. Once I figured THAT one out I put ALL my most used folders there for instant access.

If you launch a widget from where you download it (instead of moving it to the library folder), doesn't it dissapear next time you reboot? That, of course, assumes you ever reboot!!!!
