Help with winning the iTunes Music Store contest
So, you want to win those 20 iPods and a chance to hang with Coldplay, do you? Well get in line, buster! Actually, iTunes Music Store Estimator just might increase your odds. It's a fully editable (AppleScript Studio/Xcode required) project that displays the estimated current total of tracks sold on the iTunes Music Store. It also estimates the time of the next milestone sale (every 100,000th track). The app updates its estimate user-specified intervals and beeps when there are 10 seconds left until the next estimated milestone sale. There's also a dashboard widget available. Download it now, and obsessively sit in front of you Mac!

the numbers on the widget don't seem to match with what's on apple's main page. in fact, there's a 6-7 thousand song descrepancy

What makes anybody think that the number displayed is actually the current number sold?
I can see where there might be a 'cache' of songs sold that keeps the counter running. In other words, buying at the last second or two might not get you even close. You might need to buy earlier to account for the cache.
Just something to think about.

Not sure, but according to the widget's author, "uses the same source data as the Apple counter. If Apple changes the source data format or location, this application may break."
Could be?
