Software Update: PowerBook G4 Graphics Update 1.0
Apple just released PowerBook G4 Graphics Update, version 1.0. They say it improves graphics stability for some 1.67-GHz PowerBook G4 computers. Apple recommends this update for the following PowerBook G4 computers:
- PowerBook G4 (15-inch, 1.67 GHz)
- PowerBook G4 (17-inch, 1.67 GHz)
Installation of the PowerBook G4 Graphics Update requires Mac OS X 10.4.2. I have a 12-inch Powerbook, so I don't know if 15-inch and 17-inch owners will see this in Software Update, but it's available for download now.
As usual, if it creates or solves any problems, be sure to let us know!
Thanks, Thomas!

The only change I can see is it no longer flickers when detecting displays. Anyone else notice any other changes?

Just installed it (Al PB 15" 1.67 GHz, OS X 10.4.2, 1 GB RAM, 128 MB VRAM). Hmmm, er, may be just a case of dazzle effect ("Wow! A graphics update!"), but the screen seems to be a tad dimmer with increased contrast, which is a welcome change from the a-tad-too-bright-and-just-slightly-washed-out image which had been the norm in the past month. (By the way, it was previously plagued by the loss of display profiles when fast user switching, causing the screen to grow increasingly bright, and which could only be cleared by restarting the PB and then creating a customized display profile. This issue has been reported elsewhere as a 10.4 problem, though I have not seen any further references to it lately.) I will let you know how it goes in a couple of days.

I was having some strange screen anomolies prior to this update. When unplugging my 3 week old 15" Powerbook 1.67GHz I would get what some people call "screen tearing", but it just looked like some crazy pixel problem which either corrected itself in a about 30 seconds, or if I closed the lid, and then opened it again the problem would be fixed. Now this never happens, the download seems to have solved the problem.

Oddly enough, I'm seeing it in my software update too.... 15" PB 1.5GHz though. Anybody have any reports of it installing correctly on anything but the aforementnioed computers?

I have a 15" 1.67ghz, with the 128MB gfx. What would happen to me is whenever I would switch between "Better Performance" Or "Better battery life." Or Unplug or plugin, it would cause the screen to have anomolies. It would sort of divide vertically across the screen many times, for about a second.
I started noticing it when I updated to 10.4.2.
This update fixed it.
Cool.

Words cannot describe how happy I am to read this. I just bought a Powerbook G4, and I was worried I'd need to get the laptop repaired because of the tearing effect. It was freaky every time I saw it.

I have 1.5 GHz 15" PB with 1 GB RAM and SuperDrive. I also received this software update. Does anyone know if I should install it?
I have noticed the so-called tearing sometimes on my desktop.

Hey, this might be a dumb question but whenever i turn on my 1.67GHZ 15" powerbook it makes that noise that all macs do when they start up but the white screen with the apple doesn't show up for more than a few seconds. Usually when i turn on my computer in front of other people (who don't have macs) ask if the computer is starting up or not. It's annoying and i wish the white screen would come up simultaneously with the "buuhhhh" or something. Anyway, does anyone else have this? Will the update fix it?
