Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Tiger

Vista vs. Tiger Paul Thurrott has a reputation of being Microsoft's monkey boy. He does run a popular tech site called 'Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows,' however,  I think this reputation is a little overstated. It seems to me that he has respect, and possibly admiration, for Apple but doesn't agree with everything the company does and there's nothing wrong with that.

He has started a series on the SuperSite comparing and contrasting Windows Vista Beta 1 to Tiger. This is an unfair comparison to both OS's since Vista is in Beta and Tiger is Apple's currently shipping OS, but it is an interesting read nonetheless. Read Part 1 and get a taste of what the Windows world will be using in a few years and be thankful that you can see some of these 'new' features right now on your Mac.

Doesn't Apple have a patent on this "stacks" interface concept? If so, is it one of those Microsoft was allowed to cross-license after the 1997 investment? http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcase/vistab1_vs_tiger_09.jpg

I have said this before, and (obviously) I am saying it again, the Macintosh OS X is simply the best operating system because it makes older machines run even better. With each Windows "upgrade" you have to increase the horsepower of your computer. Not so with OS X. On my five year old Pismo (G3 400 and 256 Ram) I have upgraded the OS three times (10.2 > 10.3 > 10.4). While each upgrade step came with more features and functionality, it made my five year old Powerbook run faster. Try that (Windows 98 > Windows 2000 > Windows XP) on a five year old Dell laptop.

"If you go back and look at the WWDC 2004 keynote video, you'll see Steve Jobs demo virtually every single major new feature in Tiger. A year later, when the product actually shipped, little had changed and nothing major was added." Does that mean they actually spent time improving other aspects of the OS... say security..?

Read Paul's earlier posts and you'll see he's changed his tune recently. As for the look of Windows Vista, I wouldn't make any judgments just yet. It's been the plan all along to hold off on the Aero look and feel until late in the game. It still may suck, but it won't look anything like beta 1.

I recall Thurott posting on WinSupersite he tried and failed to install a specific build of Longhorn on his Powerbook (using VPC) of all things.

Thurrot's reputation is not based on his bias toward Windows but in his false and blatantly ignorant sayings about the Mac OS, as some already pointed out here.
