My thoughts on the Mighty Mouse

Mighty MouseI finally got my hands on a Mighty Mouse last week, and I hooked it up to my trusty Powerbook, Ambrose, and I have been using it ever since. But before I get into my thoughts about the mouse I would like to thank the good folks at Springboard Media here in Philly.

On my way home from work I decided, on a whim, to see if Springboard had any Mighty Mouses in stock. I walked up to the door, which was open, and noticed they closed at 6pm. Glancing at my watch I was that it was 6pm on the dot. I ducked into the store and I was told the store was closed. I was ready to leave when a helpful woman asked me what I wanted, and I responded, just a Mighty Mouse. She rang me up and I walked away a happy camper.

You all know what the Mighty Mouse is, but you want to know if it is worth your money. It does take a little while to get used to, but you can't go wrong with this mouse. The scroll ball (or nipple) is great, and I love the tactical feedback it gives  you, and using the either the left or right 'button' feels natural.

I would like to see a long USB cord on the Mighty Mouse, but other than that I say, 'Good job, Apple!'

The closest I'm going to get to owning a Mighty Mouse (despite that Mightly Mouse was my elementary school years favorite cartoon) is iScroll, which is by far one of the best plugins for the non-current-generation 'Book owners. I wonder if the scroll functionality included in current 'Books is as good?

i really wanted to love the mighty mouse, but in the end it just didn't cut it for me. 1) ergonomics. the thing was too damn flat. my wrist practically cramped every time i used it. 2) inability to click multiple buttons at once. i use expose for drag-and-drop a lot, but what good is mapping extra buttons to expose if you can't drag something while activating expose? i know there are screen corners and other alternatives, it's just that other (cheaper) computer mice are capable of this and apple's isn't.

Dude. Constantly calling your PB "Ambrose" -- and referring it as a "he" -- creaps the crap out of me.

I ordered mine the day it was released, and I love it. I use it on my iBook at home. I had that problem with Firefox, but thanks to the suggestions above have now fixed it. I think that to get the best out of the Mighty Mouse, you need to be running Tiger. If you're running anything older than Tiger or (heaven forbid) using it with a PC, you just have a very stylish, very expensive two-button mouse with a scroll ball.

Horribly done right clicking. End of story. The touch sensitivty requires that you lift your left finger off the mouse to right click. Absolutely moronic. Im infuriated I bought one of these. The scroll nipple doesn't always work. You have to really scroll it hard. The side squeeze buttons are ok, although awkward. I accidentally have squeezed them once or twice. Don't buy this mouse. Horribly designed and hyped to be much better than it actually is. Why doesn't anyone mention the fact you have to lift your left finger to right click? This is just plain idiotic.

I may have just had a bad mouse when I bought one, but mine seemed to stick a lot when I was left-clicking. Maybe it was the way I was holding it. The side buttons seemed alright, but the ball is too small. It works OK, but I can't see it being all that durable - it looks like it'll break after a few months. What sealed it for me was when my three-year old tried it. He got confused by the non-existent buttons and kept right-clicking things. (He's used to the old one button.) Sort of defeats the whole purpose of the two-buttons-as-one thing if a toddler can't get it. So I traded it in for a wireless Logitech. Half the price, much better response. Sorry, Apple!

Pop Astronaut, it sounds like you're using FireFox? Try disabling that feature and replacing it with "real" horiziontal scrolling within the webpage by following the instructions here -> http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050821141856688&lsrc=osxh Gwaant, the problem you're describing is also a problem with the PowerBook (and I assume the iBook) two-finger scrolling as well. However, I think this is more of a problem with either the browser and system mouse settings or the actual webpage code itself. I doubt it's the mouse but someone who is more knowledgeable may be able to chime in.
