Buy a Newton, support the Red Cross

2100You've always wanted to purchase a Newton. Now is the prefect time to finally do it. J&K Sales currently has five near mint Newton 2100's for sale on Ebay, and 100% of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

I have found J&K Sales to be a very reputable distributor. I've purchased three Newtons from them over the years, as well as a few cables.  They've always arrived intact, in time and in working order. When these folks say "near mint," they mean it. So take this opportunity to go green and aid those in need all at the same time.  You'll be glad you did.

Heh, Sorry, but the Newton is only dead if nobody is using it. LOTS of people are still using it (and it's still being developed for), so, hence, it's not dead.

The Newton was a creation of John Scully. Steve Jobs hates the thing. Upon his return in 1997, one of the first things he did was axe the Newton. It is not coming back. End of discussion.

I have been thinking of getting a newton and a eMate for a long time. Now I finally can! Apple really needs to go back to the Newton market and the Emate market. I have used both before and they are truly awesome. The ultimate Apple PDA would have to include: A great design. A camera. OSX A color screen. A phone. WiFi. Email. Itunes. And finally, a classic Newton mode. Also Apple could compete with Palm. Really, the phone could be an optinal feature. The only thing Apple would charge you for is: The Hardware: $100 The OS: $50 The Second Newton Os: $14 The camera: $50 All that is $240. That is a price anyone would pay. Really, the stuff isn't valued at much, or at least, that is how I see it. The rest could be shareware by Apple or third parties.

I have bought a MP 2100 from J&K and I recieved it in great working order. I also purchased a serial to Newton Interconnect cable from them and it has worked flawlessly. I'd highly recommend them if you're looking for anything Newton related.

I agree that Apple can make better products than any other company.....even products that already exist. However, Apple already did the PDA thing and the public didn't go for it (for the most part) the first time. Now, one can definitely make the argument that Apple was TOO FAR ahead of their time and the market just wasn't quite ready for the Newton. I just don't see Apple trying the Newton thing again. If they did, it would have to be something so over-the-top that it completely knocked everyone on their you-know-what's. If they put out anything that resembled a Palm or PocketPC device, I don't think the public would buy it. I'm not trying to knock the Newton idea. Heck, I even owned one. I just don't see Apple going to the well again. Now, if Apple has something that would make me want to throw my LifeDrive into the lake.......let's see it. I'll be the first one in line.

Okay, first of all: I HATE when somebody calls any market "saturated", especially a company who uses it as an excuse to not introduce a product. People use that word, along with the phrase "why re-invent the wheel" as an excuse to not put some creative thought on how they can put something out that will change the minds of anybody who uses it. THAT's what Newton was. You know that if you've ever used one. It's not just a PDA (though the term was coined by Scully to 'classify' the Newton), it's a revolutionary way of looking at the way you work with computers. The Newton GUI, the Pen-based system, and other elements was supposed to bring computing to the masses (by replacing the old spiral notebook, and using that same notepad as an inspirational metaphor), unfortunitly the price point kept it away from the masses. The $1000 price tag would be a lot for people today, just think of how expensive it was 12 years ago. So, while Apple was re-inventing markets (not only was the so-called PDA market already around, but so was Pen-computing), Palm swept in and gave the world a child's finger painting compaired to Apple's Monet. The world bought the finger painting because it was much more practicle in price, and it fit better in their living room. If Apple really sat down and thought it through, they could produce a spectacular device, one which would force people to re-think they way they use mobile computers. A truely thought out project would make you wonder why no one ever thought about the limitations they were stuck with in their Palm Computers and Windows Mobile devices. While the competition is 'wow'ing the public because "now you can rotate the screen" (a 'brand new' feature in Windows Moible 2003 SE, yet on the Newton as of OS 2), Apple would make you wonder how you ever got by using a small screen and a pathetic scribble system to enter text into a dated device. Just like they did with the iPod. And OS X. And the Mac OS. And the Apple I. Some markets Apple invented, some they re-invigerated. As mentioned before, the personal MP3 player market was already 'saturated.' Not because there were lots of devices out there, but because no one was buying them. Not only did Apple make it cool, but they made it easy for the average person to understand. "Why spend $400 on an mp3 player, when I can spend $59 on a CD player and just burn CDs??" Apple's response: "1000 songs, in your pocket." Short and simple. Yes there were digial music devices with hard drives, but no one bothered to explain WHY such devices were great, or make them easy to use, or even bothered to put the best industrial designer in the industry on top of the curve to make the device a fashion statement to carry around. Apple did.

The market was saturated with MP3 players when Apple first entered the market. They were all really bad in design and features, which is why Apple dominated. Newton was at the top of the hill before it was pulled back in the mid 90's, but since they still have the best handwriting technology these days I'd expect an Intel MacTablet Mini or something named like that. Just keep asking and Apple will make you your favorite hardware.

I would have to disagree. The market is already saturated with PDAs. Apple needs to stay ahead of the curve, not follow it. Apple has already been there and done that. They need to constantly be looking for something that everyone ISN'T doing.
