iTunes 5 looks like SoundJam
So, as I am reading all your comments on my Hot or Not post, I realized that there's something very familiar about the new iTunes 5 interface: it looks like the old SoundJam that you can see here. (Thanks to Scott for the link!)Is it just me, or did Apple just go retro?

it's about time that both time elapsed and time remaining can be seen at once. the real question is the support for gapless playback. and no, whatever itunes 4.x has is not gapless.

The iTunes 5 interface is much more refined. I also wouldn't say that this is a new similarity. iTunes has always had the brushed metal look and that SoundJam skin is just a rip-off of Quicktime 4+. They basically just changed the gradient and texture of the window a bit, made the display useful, and added a gradient to the display. Mainly the whole application looks classier but not enough to justify 5.0 IMHO. Of course I think that Apple has over done it a bit with their version numbering for everything except the OS.

Not only does it look like soundjam, it's actually based on it. Apple bought soundjam an age-and-a-half ago, and turned it into iTunes 1.0.

Crazy! They both use, like, colors and shapes and stuff.

Well, the people who actually created SoundJam MP are the same people who created iTunes. So not so creepy or suprising

Open up iTunes with, say, Safari or a Finder window open behind it: iTunes looks less like brushed metal than those apps. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of brushed metal!

Umm... they don't look all that similar. At all, really. iTunes 4.9 looked more like SoundJam than 5 does, as others have already said.

Umm, sorry, but SoundJam looks better than iTunes 5.

I like the new look, but the new mini player looks whack for some reason. And on the Windows version (without the dropshadow) there is an extra 1 pixel of black on the sides of the main itunes window...looks weird.

Anyone else notice that WMA is now what is chosen for you in itunes as your "import using"...
Perhaps as sign of things to come.
I might be wrong but i think WMA importing wasnt even an option in the other version(s).

also now in the ipod spec page
"Upgradable firmware enables support for future audio formats"
Dont think that was there before either

If Apple goes WMA, I'm going to shoot myself. I've come close to doing that today!

#13 - jh: I don't see that WMA option. Are you using MacOS or Windows? Could it have been from some previous plugin? I'm on a windows computer right now and don't see WMA :-/

Hm, I guess they look a bit alike but not really. But man did you take me on a trip down memory lane! SoundJam! It's like it's 2001 all over again and I'm using 10.0! Or 9....

Seems like I downloaded a skin for Audion before iTunes existed that looked remarkably like this. Dare I say it looked better? Seems like there were option for choosing the color of the backlighting in the "display" area. It could be blue or green or clear.
Now that I think about it, I miss Audion's downloadable skins a lot. .
