Once you go Mac... sometimes you go back
At least that's what Russell Beattie is experiencing. He has been having some problems with his Powerbook (which he's been using for 7 months) and he is contemplating switching back to Windows XP.The shocking truth is that all computers have problems. They are tools which you use in order to accomplish goals, whether that be podcasting, graphic designing, system administrating, or what have you. You have to use the right tool for the job, and keep in mind that no machine will be trouble free.
My Mac just gets out of my way and enables me to get more work done, but if Russell is experiencing something different then I wish him well on his XP voyage, and I'll welcome him back when he realizes he has made a horrible mistake (come on, you knew I couldn't leave it at that).

I just glanced over his Blog It's very queer that someone that works so frequently with computers/software can't appreciate such fine craftsmanship that Apple Computers produce. I noticed over that years that diehard Windoze users are just that! No switching that fellow! I'm an more experience user (none programmer), and used many platforms and I can tell the difference between good and bad.

I would therfore treat a lot of what is written as uninformed baloney. It's UNIX as UNIX. I use ALL platforms and of course XP is not that bad but neither is OSX and it's sad that people write such tripe.

Your ISP charge you by the character? # 21 - That's cool however I am just the opposite. I did not go to Mac until OS X because I hated MacOS. Didn't really multitask, dump in trash to eject???, set a programs memory manually??? Cryptic type X error crashes. A crapload of extentions/ extension manager. and lots more. I love OS X because it let me dump Windows. :D
September 26 2005 at 2:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAs an ex Mac-addict it is interesting reading these posts. I've used Macs since the first 128k machine and always promoted the Mac wherever/whenever I could, laughed at the dot-three extentions on Windows machines, and basically just enjoyed my OS superiority. That was before OS X. As a Mac die-hard I tried, really tried to like X. I upgraded all my apps, got the shareware control panels to make it less Windows-like, but in the end moved on to XP. Why? Because Mac OS X is SO Windows like, I figured I may as well go with Windows. In the end, the transition from OS 9 to XP was EASIER than from OS 9 to X. I know it may come as a shock to some of you, but comments like "he's not creative", "he needs a hobby", "complaining about his own ignorance" aren't really compelling arguments for switching to/staying with a Mac. After all, it's just a personal choice we all have to make.

I mean, one of his complaints about the mac is "Does anyone use Sherlock any more?"... says it all really.
September 26 2005 at 11:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCome on, folks! Let's not be ideologues. A computer is a tool. Everyone should use the best tool for the work they want to accomplish. What's it to you? He doesn't like his Macs. What do YOU care? How does that affect you in any way? If he goes back to WinXP and he's happy, good for him. I wish him luck. I'm not going to bother to read the article, because I honestly don't care what some stranger thinks about my computer brand of choice. And neither should you. For me, the reality distortion field has taken a MAJOR hit since Tiger was released. I HATE it. But I still like it better than Windows. But what do I have to deal with constantly on these boards? People telling me: 1.) I'm lying. (WT?!) 2.) I don't know what I'm doing. (Completely untrue -trust me) 3.) I have tons of crapware or Panther optimizations running on my computer (Quicksilver? Seriously, people) Give it a rest. If you can't deal with criticism of Apple, you should seriously re-examine your attitudes.

September 26 2005 at 11:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've owned both Macs and PCs. There is no comparison when it comes to usability and stability. The Mac is so much more stable than Windows, to read this individuals post makes my head hurt. For the most part, I bet this sad individual simply clicked through a few things that he really wasnt supposed to, and now hes complaining about his own incompetence. His entire list of "problems" is a direct result of not knowing what hes doing. I've had a dell for 2 years now, and i will never take that over my mac if given the choice. Windows is simple a poor operating system in comparison to OSX. One piece of advice to this person, read a manual.

September 26 2005 at 10:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't know what this dude uses his computers for besides blogging but whatever he does it sounds awfully boring. This guy has seemling no creativity and no style. I really hope he does switch to XP or Linux so he can stop spouting out such ignorance. Good riddance.
