More iPod nano Wonkiness

What the heck? First my iPod nano was freaking out on me, and now I'm getting this error every time I connect the nano to my PowerBook. Everything works fine, but this little pop-up in iTunes is both annoying and disconcerting. Anybody else seeing this?

The USB ports on the PowerBook are somewhat underpowered (I could never get a LaCie drive to work under USB with my PowerBook, but Firewire was fine). USB devices which require power (especially drives) sometimes don't work with a PowerBook (eps the 15" model).
Do you have other USB devices plugged in or any firewire devices?

I am sure there will be an iPod nano firmware update out very soon to address these issues.

Hm... my iPod mini was doing that and I figured it was because I'd dropped it one too many times. Strangely, I was using the Firewire connection.

Didn't you write a post about TUAW not being our technical support? Shouldn't also work the other way?

My Nano doesn't do this when connecting via USB to my PowerBook... or will it eventually do this? Or is it only if I have some other USB device attached?

hooka rat, there's a HUGE difference between noting odd behavior in a new piece of technology and asking if anyone else has noticed it and asking for tech support. Tech support tends to be things like "hey, I have this weird problem where my nano isn't working with iTunes. If you could post a solution for that it would be great! Love the site, btw! Thanks!" It's too vague to be useful or for us to be of use.

It's all about the power. Try plugging it in only on the left side. That gets more power for some reason.
For LaCie portables, I have the 100GB and you have to use the separate USB power along with the USB line. Plug the power in the left potr of course.
Makes a pain in the neck when I've only got two USB ports for the 100GB LaCie, my RAZR, my Dell [for shame] Axim Pocket PC and my iPod nano.
Firewire support please? I never have any problems daisy chaining my firewire ports from my 250GB powered LaCie or any device that has Firewire in and out. Even up to three or four daisy chained firewire devices.

Not that you'll care, CK, but that snarky remark to hooka rat just cost you at least one regular reader: me.
Contacting technical support is asking for help with a technical problem.
You're asking for technical support. You just get to do it because you write for TUAW. Which I won't be reading anymore. Honestly, after the worthless and consistent Nano posts for the past few weeks, I'm not going to be missing much.

hooka's right, I wasn't trying to be snarky. Just honest. We get *lots* of tech support requests that we cannot possibly answer. My original post about this that hooka references wasn't trying to be snarky either and it does direct people to sites that actually offer mac tech support.

i'm going to second "hooka's right", the past several weeks of TUAW have really gone down hill and there seems to be a lot of filler (to keep ad revenue up, i suppose). i've already given up reading engadget, looks like weblogs, inc. is out of my rss readers altogether.

I know you guys said TUAW isn't for tech support, but I have an iPod question. My 3G iPod (which I have already sent back once for a new battery) just had its extended 90 day warranty run out. Of course, the warranty runs out and it stops working. It seems as if the hard drive is making a wierd clicking noise, a folder with an exclamation point, and occasionally a beeping sound. I have a friend who's mini did this too- and he sent it back and Apple sent him back a new mini that works fine. I didn't know if this is just a warranty issue and I'm out of luck or this is a widespread problem (because I have heard of others with this problem). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Damn, picky ass people out here... sheesh! quitting engadget and TUAW... next thing you know, they'll be dropping the internet from their systems because there's nothing of value out here anymore.
C.K. One solution to try is hooking up a powered USB hub and seeing if the nano errors out on that. That will at least tell you if it's related to USB in general or just the power that the port on the PB is putting out.

Will, even with it being barely out of warranty, I'd still call Apple and see what they can offer. It's worth a shot. Otherwise, you may want to try some of the 3rd party iPod places that replace batteries and do work. Of course, if anything costs more than $200, the new color 4G models are pretty nice... ;)

Willy, it sounds like the hard drive failed (especially if it is clicking). Call Apple and see if they smile upon you.

So are you saying that its not a common problem? I mean I've heard stories of people with the same problem.

Yeah, I really liked firewire MUCH better than USB2. Sad. Oh well. Does anyone know if the newer 60gb colors can even use the old firewire cables, i'd sure as hell buy one if it did.
On the topic of being pissed at the author, lighten up people.

The big problem is that both the trackpad and the bluetooth piggy back off of one of the USB ports on the 15" and as a result the iPod connection can be a bit dodgy. I've had the same problem with a nano and a 30GB photo. Just use the other USB port and see if that sorts it out. Also the point about the low power was right as I have the same problem with a Lacie Porsche mobile HD. If you wiggle the USB plug in the port that can sort it out.
Oh and yes old firewire cables do work with the new 60GB photo as long as they have the dock connection on the end or you have a send station.
