Rollercoaster ride for iPodSubwayMaps.com

ipodsubwaymaps.com logoFirst iPodSubwayMaps.com got shut down simply for too much traffic, then cities like New York and San Francisco sent poor William Bright, the app's creator, cease and desist letters. After that, New York at least offers the guy the ability to purchase a one year license to use their maps for $500.

But wait, there's more: just yesterday the Washington DC WMATA sent William a license to use their maps - for free! How cool is that? This is such a great gesture from a company in the day and age of "cease and desist everything." Like William says on his blog: everyone go to DC and ride the metro!

There are files for the NYC Subay Map here: http://www.thenycsubwaymap.com/NYCSubwayMap.zip Grab them ASAP and share them with others (host them, file share, bit torrent, etc). Good luck.

I just bought a 60 gig ipod and I would love to put the NYC subway maps on it. Anybody know where I could download the zip? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

I question why there is an intellectual property issue in the first place for government created articles - we paid for these items to be created in the first place. Why is there objection to them being spread for free?

Wow, the intellectual property wars have sure gotten ridiculous. What is the point of restricting usage of a subway map when it's obvious that the use only increases ridership, and thus revenues!? Years ago, when the Newton was new and cool, I created an interactive DC Metro map for it. It got favorable publicity and downloads, and the folks over at Metro never so much as blinked an eye. Despite their problems running a subway system, they at least understand that PR is more important than tyrannically enforcing copyrights.

I knew I should have download them before this happened. When I first heard of these maps I didn't think much of them but now I regret not paying more attention. I travel to most of these cities they would have been very helpful.

"I have to say that anything to encourage public transportation use in the U.S. should be lauded with enthusiasm by the cities." One would think, hey Greg? :) Well said. I totally agree, I'm a huge mass transit fan. Living in Denver, CO it isn't always easy, but we fortunately have 5 new light rail lines being built in the region over the next decade. Three cheers for sensibility!

I'm incredulous that there would be any backlash from the transit authorities. Coming from a Canadian perspective, but having lived in Pittsburgh and New York for several months, I have to say that anything to encourage public transportation use in the U.S. should be lauded with enthusiasm by the cities. Good on DC. Let's hope more cities wake up and smell the enlightenment.
