Apple and Napster pull ads from P2P sites

iTunes logoAfter the UK record industry threatened Apple and Napster with legal action, the two have pulled ads for their music services from P2P sites. The UK labels called it "ironic" that the two leaders of the legitimate music download industry (Napster's a leader? When did this happen?) are advertising on sites that prosper from the illegal distribution of music.

The big problem I see with this is: if you take ads for legitimate services away from the one likely place music pirates might see them, how else are these wayward downloaders going to kick the habit? Oh well, guess this is why the RIAA isn't trying to recruit me.

Advertising sustains publications, as well as create publicity. It's the first part of the equation here that has the RIAA concerned.

I think the objection to Apple and Napster advertising on P2P sites is due to the fact that they are paying these illegal sites for the ad space and thus are supporting the P2P sites! Revenue like this would help to maintain the illegal activity. I also don't believe that advertising will change people's attitudes in this case. As long as there are illegal organisations creating pirated content there will be people consuming it. Tofu the Kid http://tofuthekid.blogspot.com/

Yes, I find it MORE ironic that Apple and Napster are forced to remove their ads from P2P sites. Of course it makes sense to advertise a more legal alternative to file swapping where it's going on.

"ironic" as in, anyone can see that's exactly where it needs to be advertised? "Can't see past the nose on his own face" is an old but relevant saying.

Surely P2P sites are the best places for legal download services to advertise. No point preaching to the converted, is there?
