iPod nanos abound in Tokyo subway

iPod nano wall tokyoTokyo seems to have all the fun when it comes to creative, spared-no-expense advertising, as you can see from this massive iPod nano poster that showed up in a Tokyo subway. Cult of Mac found a Flickr user by the name of purpin who posted a few pics of the poster and the take home, life-size plastic iPod nano cutouts that are attached, as well as action shots of the poor Apple employees who have to keep the entire thing stocked. Purpin mentions how sturdy the cutouts feel, and on the back are a URL and QR codes (what's a QR code?) for a site from which you can download iPod nano wallpapers for your mobile phone.

Something must be said for Apple's ability to go to extremes. When they decide to go over the top, they really go over the top.

Jon: yea we have a lot of stuff going on the site. The "Send us news tips" link is near the bottom of the middle column, under the heading "Resources." Find the "Powered by Blogsmith" button and go up just a little bit. To make things easier though, I think virtually every blog under the Weblogs Inc umbrella has its tips form at /tips. So engadget.com/tips, tuaw.com/tips, design.weblogsinc.com/tips, etc. Hope this helps!

the QR barcode points your phone to: http://applestore-mobile.jp/ipod/peel1 which is only accessible by mobile phones.

I sent this into engadget LAST week. An online magazine called http://www.pingmag.jp had pics up on the web last week regarding this. I wanted to notify TUAW but I couldn't find the submission form! Maybe you should make the link more obvious? (still can't find it...if there even IS one)

Any Japs got the URL that's transcoded on the back? Care to post it?

"Something must be said for Apple's ability to go to extremes. When they decide to go over the top, they really go over the top." I don't think it's Apple that's doing this at all. I think this sort of thing happens anywhere but the U.S., if you ask me. If your statement is true, then why doesn't Apple do this sort of thing in the U.S.?

some (many?) mobile phones in japan have the ability to scan QR codes with their camera, which would usually contain an URL to a website to download something (i.e. ringtones, wallpapers, etc). Pretty slick technology.

#2 James is right. You take a picture of the black square with your mobile phone and then it reads it like a link. (or something like that)
