The iTunes Music Store in New Zealand (unofficially)

itunes_logoNew Zealanders: You needn't envy your Australian neighbors anymore. You, too can purchase music from the iTunes music store, by following these instructions:

  1. Open the iTunes Music Store
  2. Scroll to "Country Selection"
  3. Select Australia
  4. Sign in with your Apple ID or .Mac account, and enter your information
  5. There is no step five
It doesn't seem to matter which Australian state you select during sign up. This seems to be made possible by two little loopholes. First, many banks that operate in both Australia and New Zealand apparently use the same credit card prefixes, thereby identifying all of their customers as living in Australia. Secondly, many area ISPs do business in both countries, but only use IPs that are associated with Australia.

Of course, it probably won't be long before this little oversight is found out, so get it while the getting is good.

Update: Looks like Apple has caught on already. People who registered before the middle of this week are still able to purchase music (for now), but new registrations are being denied. Drat.

Thanks, Dave5!

Seems to me there's an opening for a bright young lad there. An Ozzie lad anyway. Buying iTMS Gift Certificates and selling or auctioning them on TradeMe. Actually it would work for anyone with a US credit card too. So long as the purchaser has the unique number from under the scratchie panel it doesn't matter where they are downloading the tune.

Thank you for saying "There is no step 5" it remindes me of much simpler times when I could use the mac's easy setup as the best reason to own one. This is especially true when I worked as the mac nerd for an advertising firm. New employees had their own machine set up for them about 45 min after being hired. Unless they worked in the PC (blech) section then it would take me six to eight hours to get everything working. I used this info to beat over the head of any blind to the real world PC user. thanx again

We have had a similar discussion (http://www.dave5.com/blog/2005/10/25/iTunes+Australia.aspx)... it turns out that as long as you had registered before the middle of this week you can still use the service. Any new registrations are denied. I am no sure when they will go thru and weed out early registrants.

It worked for some, for a day or so. More here: http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2005/10/26/1638

Doesn't work with my New Zealand ANZ Back Visa OR my New Zealand Westpac Visa. I would be surprised if it worked for ANY NZ credit card. This story could be false...
