Buying an iPod through iTunes

iPod_Store.jpgYou've been able to purchase an iPod directly from iTunes off and on for a while now, but why oh why does Apple make it so hard to get there? There's no obvious link to the iPod Store when you launch iTunes or click on the iTunes link to the Music Store, and searching in iTunes for iPod Store doesn't turn it up either. I finally got to the iPod Store by clicking the thumbnail labeled Which iPod Are You? in the Music Store. If you're as familiar with Apple's advertising slogans as we are, you might think to do this, but why obfuscate? Sure you can go to the Apple site, but iTunes seems like the perfect place from which to sell iPods. So why not make it easier for iTunes users to get to the iPod Store?

Hah. Expand the question: why don't they make it easier to find anything on iTMS? The whole place is designed to get kids to make impulse buys. Try finding the independent artists... they are there, but finding them is impossible. Much easier just to use Google or even go to Amazon. But people love iTMS. My wife likes that I can send her songs. And that's related: try Gifting a single song. Can be done but (to me anyhow) is like pulling teeth... Apple wants you to gift a whole album. And the store conveniently forgets your choices if you get lost. Maybe they don't want to seel iPods because they're out of a target price range? Jeff

I don't know, but maybe it's because of the British Apple Music corp.. Notice that it has never been called the "Apple Music Store?" They have had an agreement for quite some time that "apple" would never step on the musical toes of "apple music." My guess is that that is the reason they can't sell "apple-" branded stuff on the iTMS. jm2cents. Josh

Hey, you *can* buy an iPod completely inside of iTunes now! Sorry, I didn't grok the meaning of this story, since I've always been directed back to Apple's web site when clicking on one of those buttons in iTunes. But I just tried and it wouldn't let me apply my store credit balance towards the purchase. Oh so close.

Probably because the iTMS iPod store offers only that: iPods. The regular store also offers other Apple hardware and lots of iPod accessories. So it makes sense that they would prefer you buy your stuff at the Apple Store, because you'll be more easily tempted to spend more money on accessories and the like.

I've wondered if they could come up with a way to apply iTunes gift cards towards an iPod. A kid could convince all of his relatives to give him iTunes cards for a birthday or holiday and effectively "save up" for new Nano. I guess then they'd have to actually sell it inside of iTunes instead of a link back to a web page, although iTMS and the Apple Store do use the same Apple ID info... At least the new iTunes 6 added another wish of mine: The ability to buy specific songs and send them to someone. The "mix tape" of the 21st century.
