Mac Emacs
Tim Bray, one of the ubergeeks who switched to the Mac after OS X was released, has composed a post talking about some Emacs options for OS X. What is Emacs you ask? It is a text editor that some people swear by (others are Vi people, and if you thought Mac vs. PC was an ugly argument never get in the middle of some terminal jockeys verbally jousting over Vi vs. emacs) which is shipped with a large number of *nix systems, including OS X.Tim points out that emacs is most likely installed on your Mac right now, but if you want a nicer version of it you should give either Aquamacs or Emacs.app a try (Tim uses Aquamacs himself).
All this talk about text editors got me to thinking, what do you use to edit text? More often than not I find myself in Textwrangler.

There's a pre-compiled Carbon Emacs at http://www.porkrind.org/emacs/ though it is a bit out of date. I find it perfectly usable. Otherwise, I use Smultron (single-window, open files displayed as a list in a sidebar): http://smultron.sourceforge.net/ In the terminal for quick edits, I use vim.

November 08 2005 at 8:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI started using textmate for rails projects, and now find myself using it for all editing. textwrangler, subetha, and bbedit, have gone by the wayside fast. Now looking for text mate to support bonjour, svn, and sftp, and it will be my editor for a long time. When ssh'd I use vi or pico. Never heard of nano; I'll have to try it out.

But it does show the file selector when you use the Mac combination Apple-O. I find myself using C-x C-f all the time (for the reason that you state), however, I think the Mac file open dialog is perfectly well usable with the keyboard - it's probably even better than the minibuffer when it comes to selecting files. However, one has to learn all those shortcuts. By the way... I heard that Aquamacs will support WYSIWYG printing via the Mac printing system soon :-)
November 07 2005 at 2:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMust... use... BBEdit... forever... but I am leaning with SubEthaEdit for the bonjour editing capabilities for us Web Designers; since we won't ever use a WYSIWYG editor. If all else fails, I use terminal.
