SplittingImage

splittingimageThis is a pretty cool little AppleScript hack for viewing pictures on your iPod in more detail. According to the little scripts' website SplittingImage "splits the high resolution image into several smaller tiles so you can scroll through your photo and ZOOOM".

The script is free, dependent upon the also-free iMagine Photo, and requires iPhoto 5 and a 5G iPod to work, although the site seems to indicate that a version to work with older iPods is in the works. There's even a video of the split-image in action. Check it out.

What's happening is a single image gets cut up into slices (6 wide by 5 high here) so a "picture" is actually a gallery of slices. I imagine the older iPods, with their smaller screens, show fewer thumbnails at once, so the script would have to be adjusted accordingly to work on them.

Can they make it more like blade runner, add the sounds etc. Not to mention the ability to zoom in enough to see behind something :P

I'm extremely surprised you can't zoom in on the high resolution photos on the iPod. It shocked me that it wasn't a built in feature. I had a nano before my 5g and was surprised that with such a small screen you couldn't get closer. Hopefully it's something that will be updated in firmware, but I seriously doubt it. And I know, you're not looking at the actual high res photo, but a smaller version. My point is you should be able to look at the large file and then just zoom in. The buffer is either 32mb or 64mb depending upon the model, so it doesn't seem impossible.
