Powerlogix Upgrade Necessary for OS 10.4.3
If you have installed a Powerlogix upgrade card and subsequently have upgraded your happy purring Mac to 10.4.3 of OS X, you absolutely need to install the new Powerlogix CPU Director as well. I was having really strange crash problems yesterday and today before I figured out that my poor Sawtooth G4 2.0 GHz was overheating and creating weird kernel panics and grey/black screens of death. To save yourself the same woes, simply:
- Delete the old CPU Director (I had version 2.1)
- Download the newest version (currently 2.3b1)
- Move the entire folder including the support files to your Applications Folder
- Double click on the CPU Director application to launch

To add to this - if you haven't installed 10.4.3 yet, I'd encourage you to update your CPUD version to 2.3b1 FIRST, to avoid the problems Fabienne mentioned, which can manifest rather quickly if you're not using a supported version of CPUD. And in the future, always check with PowerLogix for a new version of CPUD before you install a new OS or OS update. PowerLogix is pretty prompt about updating their software and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you upgrade things in the right order. Remember - you DID modify your hardware in a way that Apple doesn't condone, so you can't exactly expect them to make your life easier :)

I failed to update CPUD before upgrading to 10.4.3. No problems until I tried to install the new CPUD, which failed to install the kext on multiple attempts. When the computer was restarted several days later (after working fine meanwhile) it will only kernel panic. Reinstalling the old processor does not help. Now I have only kernel panics. :(

Update to above. PowerLogix rep suggested that I uninstall the CPUD 2.3b1 using the terminal after doing a 'safe' restart (holding the shift key down while rebooting). This did manage to start the computer without a kernel panic (kp). I ran the included sh script in CPUD to uninstall it. I then rebooted without a kp. The new 1.8GHz processor was reinstalled (taking out the 500MHz for the third time) and rebooted without kp. However, I was still not able to successfully install the CPUD 2.3b1. Same errors as before. I just ensured that it is NOT installed now and the computer is working fine. My only concern, validated somewhat by the PowerLogix rep, is that the CPU may run hot. He is supposed to get back to me on a terminal command to help control the heat.
