Mossberg crowns Apple "best"

crowned_imacG5.jpgColumnist Walt Mossberg confirms what we already know–that Apple makes the best computers. Comparing Macs to Windows PCs, Mossberg writes in this week's column at yahoo.smartmoney.com:

"I believe that, at the moment, Apple makes the best computers, and the best operating system, for mainstream consumers doing typical tasks–email, web surfing, office-productivity functions such as word processing and presentations, photo organizing and editing, playing and collecting music, and editing home video."

Mossberg is on the right track when he praises Apple for being the most focused of all computer makers on consumers and small business, rather than on the IT departments of large corporations. IMHO, this is what has always made Apple great and what is responsible for Apple's current increasing popularity. It's the little people that can make or break a company's reputation in the long run. Apple gives us the products we want, and we support Apple in return. What a relief to see the capitalist system working as it should for a change.

Observe that there is a lot of difference between the needs of small companies and user class "consummers" as such. Apple seems to be focused more on "companies" (of whatever size and scope), than "(home) consummers". Else, how come there is no longer a single minimal-footprint Apple keyboard in existence? (small footprint= without numerical pad or the Insert/Home/ Page Down/Eage Up/ and separate arrow keygroup of ALL current Apple keyboards).

It brought up a few interesting points, but he fails to even back up some of what he says- why is Apple the best maker of computers and developer of operating systems? In my experience, in terms of pure side-by-side comparison, OS X (Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Tabby, whatever) tends to perform less well than say, Ubuntu Linux or (Dare I mention the Big M?) Windows, although OS X has, of course, greater stability and fewer virii. Apple makes damn fine computers in terms of looks and performance. The only problem is, they have such a huge profit margin that I could build an x86 or AMD64- based computer with specifications identical to any mac and it will cost a hell of a lot less than that mac. I agree that macs have better multimedia functionality out of the box- there's no point in denying that, but it isn't anything to brag that macs can open Windows-made files. Linux has been doing the same thing for a long time.

What a relief to see the capitalist system working as it should for a change. --- This line really got my attention, because I used a VERY similar line in an email to Paul Thurrott about a week ago... Really, the problem is not with Capitalism. We need to have patents or there's no incentive to be 'first' and 'innovate'.. but once you HAVE a patent, you effectively have a monopoly.. or someone does something slightly different and a few companies have an oligopoly. The bottom line is that markets work..but the goal of innovative companies is to undo markets.. have a monopoly. Imagine how sweet Windows would have been, even 10 years ago, if there was incentive for them to innovate (ie. a universal codebase where users could choose whatever OS they wanted.. and all programs ran on all OSes.) Alas, it's not competitive, there's barely a market, and we don't really have Capitalism at all.. we have something like a corporate dictatorship. Nevertheless.. yes, once in a while, a company like Apple can make great products and still be thought of as a complete failure. They can work hard to include tons of software, stability, bleeding edge features, even drive down costs/price.. and still be thought a failure because the marketshare 'stats'.. So they work harder and harder.. This is the story of great computers going unnoticed by IT depts.. so Apple makes them better and better.. No, I'm not thanking IT depts who purchase buggy, misery/malware prone Wintel boxes..

Apple-The most important term in the World now and then. Apple is the not only the company of innovation but also the company which makes the work more easier and more entertaining. It is very user-friendly. Yes, Now the software of iPod also proved. Therefore Apple is the company which needs our support to be the No.1 in Market share too. We should work for it.

Hey skid, the Mac Mini plays Halo. They were comparing its 32 megs of video ram to a 128 meg card in a PC. Wow... I wonder what an Apple 256 graphics card does??? It's really too bad that Apple went with cheap processors instead of good ones. I HATE Intel processors when I use an AMD. AMD may have slower clock speeds, but read your PCWorld... the Athlon 64 FX-55 is THE FASTEST they ever tested. I think that Apple should have GONE WITH AMD!!! (64 bits is a standard with them)

It's just a shame about the lack of games.. it's the only thing holding me back from buing a desktop mac. I currently have a powerbook which i think is amazing for when i leave home, but at home, i still have a pc running xp pro, for games. Hopefully with the switch to intel, the mac will get more games.

I love me some Apple, too! I FINALLY got my parents to switch over to a loaded Powermac a month ago and now I get calls like: "Guess what I did/learned how to do?" Or, "Wow, this is actually fun!" Instead of, "Uh, can you help me...I can't seem to find a file...and do I need virus protection? I think I need to defrag again....or it just stopped working."
