Analyst predicts one terabyte iPod

crystalball.jpgImagine a one terabyte iPod that holds hundreds of movies and thousands of songs and photos. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicts that and more in a recent research report speculating on Apple's plans for future products. He writes that the terabyte iPod could be released within five years at a price point of around $500.

Munster predictions for Apple products in the nearer future–within 12 to 24 months–are just as exciting. He expects that Apple will release its own iPhone, and that the company will act as a mobile operator, buying mobile network access from traditional carriers and reselling it to its customers. He also thinks that Apple will enable wireless download of music and video to users' iPods within the 12 to 24 month time frame.

Munster believes Apple is positioning itself as the consumer hub for digital media. He predicts that future Macs will have Tivo-like DVR capability and improved media center apps, and he foresees iPods acting as portable digital media centers.

What do you think? Good predictions or too much smoke in that crystal ball?

increased memory is pretty much a given. No big whoop. But a future wireless-enabled ipod (of Wimax or whatever genre) opens the door to a universe. Think remote file storage and access, streaming-everything: text/audio/video/ etc. Wirelessly jacking into each other's media file-stores. Depends on the implementation of course...

iPods will eventually reach 1 Terabyte but it won't hold just music, photos and movies. It will be your computer to go. Your iPod will have the Mac OS on fast chips and your data on a spacious drive. You will simply dock your iPod to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and it becomes your computer. That's the future of mobile computing. I hope Apple will get into the phone business. Phones are too complex and poorly integrated with our computers. Apple has the ability to change this. Apple could revolutionize the cellphone industry by creating simple yet powerful cellphones. All future Macs won't have PVR capabilities. Instead Apple will release a single well designed home theater device. It will probably be the first mass market device to feature Blu-Ray. Also with the rumored demise of the 12" iBook and PowerBook, the hiring of Ex-Sony engineers and the move to Intel processors, all signs point toward an Apple tablet/reader. This is another case where Microsoft and the PC manufacturers can't figure out how to design a tablet properly. Most tablets I've seen are heavy, clunky and have zillions of buttons, ports and protrusions. I think this is another area where Apple can redefine a product category by applying it's design sensibilities.

Complete blithering idiot. Storage capacities (especially in that form factor) do not increase that quickly. That would be a 17x increase in 5 years. Not going to happen. Meanwhile, the video iPod will only really take off if we can get around the DMCA/DeCSS debacle that's holding us back from ripping our own content.

Apple will buy "3" from Hutchison 3G and become the first International company to offer both the service and the mobile phones themselves. Apple will provide broadband Internet conenctions under the .Mac brandname. Google will buy Apple and Sun Microsystems.

Seriously, what's new here? There's nothing that other analysts haven't been saying for years. And, just like a lot of people, they're probably on the mark on some things (more iPod storage, Mac DVR), but way off base about the "iPhone" and an Apple cellphone company. Why would Apple want get into the wireless business? The tremendous risks to money and reputation are more than enough for them to not do it, not to mention the fact that it has NOTHING TO DO with their core businesses. I'll eat my hat if it happens.

definitely sounds feasible...especially when thinking of the iPod as the hub. my only concern is regarding the iPod's software though. i have a hard enough time navigating 40gb of songs on my Photo, let alone trying to find something mixed in with a terrabyte of data. they're going to have to come up with a better browsing interface if this is the future.

This is entirely possible and it will happen. 10 years ago having 700 MB of storage on a CD was amazing and now 4.7 GB on a DVD feels like crap. And the devices will not only feature so much more storage, they will be way smaller than they are today.

No need to be an expert to foresee this... My two cents: computers will be smaller, faster, and better looking.

So, they're saying iPods will get more storage? Wow, who knew?! Is this seriously what passes muster as a 'prediction' these days?
