BenQ's 19-inch display made for Mac mini
Is "Made for Mac mini" the next big thing for little things? While Apple's own flat-panel displays are beautiful, savvy shoppers already know that they can save hundreds of dollars by buying a Dell, which uses the same LCD, but doesn't come housed in a case that's quite as attractive. I'm staring at ginourmous Dell display right now, as a matter of fact, and I paid a pittance for it as compared to what I would have spent on a comparable Apple monitor. But if having a black-encased monitor sitting next to your beautiful aluminum or white Apple computer bothers you, you might want to be on the look out for the new BenQ 19-inch LCD, which is tailor made for Mac mini owners. For the record, my Dell flat-panels sit next to my Cube, which is housed in a shiny, black custom -made aluminum enclosure, so it actually matches pretty well.
Hardmac has the scoop... the display not only addresses your aestethic concerns, but takes space usage into account by having designed it so that a Mac mini can sit comfortably on the display's base platform. Cable management has also been taken into account. I'm still trying to track down the rest of the specs, but BenQ displays tend to be of high quality and very affordable. This new one is expected to hit the streets at about $450.

??????like Widescreen display?
November 19 2005 at 7:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am using my 1.5GHz Mac mini with a Dell 1704FPT 17" display and very happy with it. I bought a refurbished imac from Apple first, but it had hardware problems from the day one. I returned it the next day. Mini has the portability that I want and is very silent. Also, a brand new mini with the display and keyboard was still $100 cheaper than the refurbished imac. There is much confusion about which displays work well with the mini. Just take a look at the Apple discussion boards and you will see what I mean. I am glad BenQ is releasing this display but I feel they should have introduced a 17" widescreen display in stead. 19" displays have the same resolution as 17" displays and considering mini's potential as media center, a widescreen display would have been great.
November 14 2005 at 3:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replykevin, I have 2 displays at 2 locations and 1 mac mini so having 2 of these rather than just 1 iMac would be better, but that's just me :) We all have different needs.

November 14 2005 at 2:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI remember reading somewhere that the Apple LCD and Dell LCD are the same type, but they Apple one has a better picture (or something). I know there is another reason why the Apple display costs more than the Dell one, it's not just the aluminum casing. I'll have to dig it up. Fishes, narco.
November 14 2005 at 1:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythey probably did think about it but what you're talking about is the mac mini itself (carrying it around, etc). this article is about the display attached to it, so i doubt you'd be carrying around the mini plus display. if you were, then as i said, spring for an imac
November 14 2005 at 12:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyKevin, I don't see it as the same thing. I still carry my mac mini everywhere and a lot of people love this mobility. The iMac doesn't have that feature. It basically all depends on what you need. I'm sure Apple had a good reason not to come out with a display like that, it's hard to imagine they didn't think about it.
November 14 2005 at 12:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replymight as well spring for an imac i think the people who do buy something like this may already own a mac mini.. not first-time mac mini buyers
November 14 2005 at 11:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMike, my thoughts exactly. I imagine a lot of people would have ordered one if they had the chance.
November 14 2005 at 11:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGreat move by Benq, but why the hell didn't Apple have something like this ready to ship with the mini on launch in January?
