Buy a PowerPC Powerbook, please

new powerbooksCrazy Apple Rumors' crack team of investigative reporters has uncovered Apple's plans to beat the fabled 'Osbourne Effect.' The rumor of the day (and several past days) is that Apple will be unveiling new Mactel (do I really have to use that word?) Powerbooks this January at MacWorld. This is only a rumor, but it is bound to make Mac users in the know rethink purchasing a new Powerbook until after the Stevenote at least.

CARS reports that Apple is spreading the word that the first iteration of Intel based Powerbooks will be buggy, so why not buy a stable, mature Powerbook based on the PowerPC, while you still can.

This is funny, of course, because Apple's first iteration products tend to have... challenges that get ironed out in the second or third versions. With that being said, who amongst you is going to buy the first Intel based Mac you can get your hands on?

I'm quite happy with my DP 2.7Ghz PowerMac at the moment (I've always been a desktop man myself), but I do intent on buying an Intel-based PowerBook once all the bugs have been ironed out, probably not until late 2006-early 2007. I do not intent on putting Windows on it! That would be like letting my Grannie drive a Ferarri, it's just wrong! Cheers; Poncho

Based on what I've seen of Intel's chip intentions and on the most recent version of Rosetta (sp?) I think it is highly likely that Apple will release consumer Intel machines before professional. If the January rumors are true, then I suspect we'll see iMacs, minis and iBooks being announced/released in Winter through Spring. This also allows Apple to have products available when schools begin their computer purchase planning. I suspect PowerMacs and PowerBooks will not arrive until late summer at the earliest and that the PowerBooks will be the last to arrive - though it is possible that PowerMacs may arrive first followed by PowerBooks and then another wave of more powerful PowerMacs and servers. I suspect PowerBooks will bring up the rear because Apple will want as much time as possible to learn from the problems of the iBook design and to get the fastest/coolest/least power hungry process they can. I think it highly likely that I'll buy an Intel iBook - especially if their battery life is substantially better than the meagre 2 hours I get from my PowerBook.

I bought a 15" PowerBook earlier this year (1.67 but the lower screen resolution) and am happy. I do run into slowdowns and wish that some (most) of my video work was faster though. I will NOT be buying gen 1 of the intel powerbooks, unless this one gets ruined somehow. I am thinking I might buy the intel based mini when it arrives. it will be cheap fast and not my primary machine, so if it is a little buggy no biggie. But I WILL be buying a new Intel based PowerBook if it is on gen 2 or more around this time next year. :)

I bought a 15" PowerBook in Feb of this year. If the Intel based PowerBooks perform better then I will surely sell my PPC PowerBook and get an x86 one.

Well I purchased a Rev. A G5 when the first came out and no problems with it whatsoever. So, I'm quite tempted to buy a Rev. A Intel based 15" PowerBook when they come out as well!

I have a Dual 2.0 PowerMac I bought last September. I bought a 60 Gb video iPod the day it came out. I am awaiting delivery of refurbed 12 inch, 1.5 Ghz PowerBook. If Apple came out with a fast intel based mini I would strongly consider it as a living room media center.

Just swapped my 1.25Ghz 15.2" for a new one, and it is beautiful. Perfection perfected. I will get an Intel PB - when the early bugs are ironed out, and the processing speed upgrade will amke a real difference to me.

I bought first iBook G4 800MHz with the options (BT/AE/60G HD/640M memory) and even the last one that just came out do not really add something that would make me think my first generation iBook G4 is outdated. Sure, the options are free now and the CPU is faster but I don't really mind. I would buy a first generation Intel Mac iBook or Powerbook if the specs look good and I don't really want to buy a G4 laptop anymore at this point. G5? Sure, but not G4. Rather have some version of Intel Centrino. /esc

I am getting my debt paid off now so that I can whip out my cards so fast I cut holes in my jeans. The intel based macs are going to offer bragging rights I can't afford not to have.
