Motorola plans their own Stevenotes?

RAZROh, Motorola, Apple may not be buying chips from you, but we Mac folks are still interested in what you're doing, and it seems you're interested in what Apple does. More specifically Motorola plans to follow Apple's brand of launching products by announcing them and then making them available the next day. Motorola, as most cellphone makers, announces products way ahead of time (ROKR) to prime the pump, as it were, for consumer interest. However, Moto doesn't want to give its competitors any more time than it has to to plan alternative products.

We all know that this tact works well for Apple, for the most part, but can Moto do it? Just today Moto spilt the beans about the ROKR 2 (with 56% less suckage), which isn't the best way to keep a little mystery about your products.

Plus, how many of you would visit 'The Unofficial Motorola Weblog'?

I think it depends on the product that determines when it should be announced. If it's something new and/or innovative, then a last second product launch makes some sense. It generates immediate, almost impulse buy, interest. Products that are either replacing failures, address issues with existing products, or are meant as an answer to competitors products, then a far off launch is necessary. In the case of the ROKR2, it's necessary to keep people who are interested in an iTunes cell phone from jumping ship to the SONY Walkman phone or others. Nikon, in recent memory, had the worst product launch for their VR line of lenses. Canon had their IS lenses and Nikon was losing consumers because of that. So they announced that they were coming out with a lens (1 at the time) with their version of IS called VR and it was going to be better than Canon. 1.5 years later, the lens was finally delivered. They had to announce it so far in advance to keep everyone from jumping ship, but 1.5 years is a very long time to wait, especially since they don't announce when it's coming out, just that it is at some point.

It always fascinates me when a company manages to have a fanbase. A company that wants to make a big profit. Nothing against Apple, but I think there's a tendency to get a blind spot when you become a fan of a company. I've heard of Mac fans buying Apple stock because they love Macs. Now, I'm all for only investing in companies you feel have a solid product, but there are other criteria. I guess my main point is to encourage open-mindedness, and not being brand blind. Brand loyal is one thing, but putting on blinders for one brand isn't productive, either. That having been said, I'd read a Motorola blog, sure. I'd be interested in seeing if they make more RAZR-esque, solid products or go back to making the usual crap they've put out for years.
