From TiVo to iPod: But not for Macs

ipod_tivoThis just in from the "Mac Users Get Shafted Again" department. TiVo has announced that owners of Series 2 TiVo DVR's will be able to transfer recorded shows from their TiVos to their iPods over their home networks via TivoToGo. The service can be set to synchronize the recordings on your TiVo with what's on your iPod once a day, and shows transferred in this manner will bear a TiVo watermark.

Here's the catch: It's not available for Macs. Does anyone else think it's silly that the transfer of video to an Apple product cannot be accomplished (through official channels, anyway) with an Apple computer? TiVo has taken a play from the Google playbook on this one.

Unsurprising: I think most iPod owners have PCs, not Macs. Hence Apple no longer supplies the FireWire cable as standard. However, I believe Mac owners are regarded as early adopters and trend-setters, and probably also value a refined user experience quite highly. So you'd think it would be in TiVo's interests to target them.

Calling TiVoTool trash seems pretty silly. It's awesome if you have a hacked TiVo. And if your TiVo is more than a year old, there's no warranty to void, right?

Tivo Tool is trash, you have to hack your tivo first, which voids your warranty.

TivoTool is awesome, especially if you have a DirecTiVo, which doesn't officially support copying stuff off of it regardless of if you have a Mac or Windows.

For those of us using Macs, or even (gasp!) Series 1 TiVos, you may want to check out TiVoTool at http://tivotool.com/. It seems to be a free piece of software for OS X that allows you to import programs from your Series 1 or 2 TiVo directly into iTunes. I haven't used it yet (my network isn't setup in the new apartment just yet), so I can't really say whether it works or not, but someone should give it a try and let us know.

Maybe, just maybe it's not an evil plot against Apple users. Maybe it is because they possibly can't write to HFS.

I mean, it's not too suprising. tivo has not supported anything for mac for a long time. That is why Apple should buy them, put out their own DVR, or a combination of the two,
