Widget Watch: Screenshot Plus
Move over, Capture, there's a new image capture widget in town. Screenshot Plus is a Dashboard widget that allows you to snag a full screenshot, a portion of the screen, a window or even another widget very easily. Once you've grabbed your image, you're brought back to Dashboard and it's loaded in the widget. From there, you can opt to reject the screenshot, try again, save it to your home directory or even open it in Photoshop. What's really cool is the magnifying glass you can drag over your image, like the one in Aperture. This widget has replaced Capture for me. Check it out.

"Screenshot Plus" really seems like just an exercise for the author of the widget. Sure it may have a pretty interface, and it may appeal to folks who are still enamored with the novelty of Dashboard's widgets, but there really are better ways of doing this.
Most of us already know about the screen grab shortcuts built into the Mac OS. If you don't they're easy enough to learn and use. If, after making the screen grab, you're going to further edit the image in Photoshop, there's really no pressing need for a magnifying glass.
OK, so you don't have Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements, GraphicConverter or for some reason you have removed (or never installed) iPhoto. For quick screen grab editingwith even more featuresthe better alternative would be the free ImageWell (http://www.xtralean.com/IWOverview.html) . It pops up quickly and after you've finished using it, it can be set to quit automatically. And, unlike a widget, it doesn't continue to hold onto system resources.
Sorry, but for me to want to add a widget to Dashboard it has to do something unique within its environment, and it should be easier to use than any non-widget alternatives. Screenshot Plus doesn't quite get there for me.
I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
(Full disclosure: I have no official connection with ImageWell or its creators, Xtralean software, though I have spoken with the author about another project. I just really like ImageWell and think it's the best free utility of its kind).

I'm going with Phospher on this one. Sure, it's pretty, but it's far more time and resource-consuming than many other methods of screenshot, and provides no real new functionality.
