Repairing the Mighty Mouse
Having trouble with your Mighty Mouse? It seems that a number of people are. Take heed, you can get it apart (and back together again) without breaking the retaining clip. Bill at Another Word for Nerd writes, "All I had to do was slip a razor blade between it and the body of the
mouse to cut the glue. I was then able to pop the top of the mouse off
the hinges on the bottom, unscrew the “scroll ball” assembly, pop off
its top cover, and clean the rollers."Nice! Now crack that sucker open and clean it out.

Speaking of MM, be sure to check out SteerMouse: http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/ Much more control for remapping buttons/scroll actions. Be sure to check out the About SteerMouse screen and the Analyze Device option if you like reading hex and figuring out what it means...
November 27 2005 at 6:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI thougt part of the joy of an optical mouse was you didnt have to clean it out every couple months. Why didn't they just the top optical too? That would have been real neat...
November 26 2005 at 9:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had lots of trouble with the mouse jumping. It did not require taking apart the mouse to fix. It turns out that the optical system is sensitive to large changes. I was using a fake woodgrain top desk, and that was too much change. I am now using a mousepad with little variation in brightness and color. It works fine.

November 26 2005 at 11:32 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm sure this is a foolish question, but if this is an optical mouse, how does stuff get inside? There's no roller ball to pick up gook from your desk and transfer it ...
November 26 2005 at 9:32 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt IS quite easy to disassemble the mouse actually, just push your way between the side buttons and the mouse, then take the ring off, and you're ready to clean the whole thing out. My experience here (pix taken on a cell phone... a bit blurry and dark...) - http://shirster.multiply.com/journal/item/194
