VLC 0.8.4 released

VLC new iconVLC, a media player quite dear to our hearts at TUAW, has been updated to version 0.8.4. While not quite a monumental leap of version numbers, it sounds like there have been quite a few improvements and additions. From videolan.org, the list includes: "a new VLC cone (icon, pictured), new Mac OS X wizard and extend controls dialogs, tree playlist skins2 support, HTTP interface CGI handling, linux binary codecs loader, UPnP and Bonjour service discovery, shoutcast stream forwarding, new languages" and more. Check out their change notes for the full skinny, and check out our past VLC posts here at TUAW to learn more about its many abilities, and why it holds a special place in our Applications folders.

Good call. I'm watching some Top Gear episodes on it now and it works like a charm. No stutters or jitters. Just smooth sailing. To bad Quicktime 7 broke Divx and Xvid

Does this version have better support for streaming from windows (SMB) shares? Pervious version did not handle m2v verry well.

Finally a VLC that works. The last release kept crashing.

VLC is great and has never let me down but is there a way to have an all in one window with controls attached? Much like a Quicktime window. It is somewhat annoying having to move the controls out of the way when resizing windows.

l0ne: Sure you have the character encoding for subtitles set correctly for your subtitle scripts in preferences? (Input/Codecs - Other Codes - Subtitles) Having that set wrongly caused a few subtitles to not display on my system. And speaking of subtitles... finally, there's a border around the text that's dark enough to make it readable, which is sort of an important priority when it comes to subtitling!

I use VLC as my main video player, why would I want to install some codecs for QT when I can use this great opensource player! However I don't like the icons, so I've replaced them with these: http://www.macthemes.net/articles/gossip/000350.php

Brad, That's been my experience as well. I don't use it often, but it has never failed me when needed. Chris http://amateureconblog.blogspot.com/

I never much used VLC, but it came in handy to open those pesky odd formats.
