The Internet iTunes Registry is a place for you to upload your iTunes XML index and then run a growing number of analytical tools on it. For instance, you can compare your index to other users, browse by letter, or see how diverse your collection is. An informational report is stored in a note that's then saved in your iPod's notes folder. While not that many people have submitted their iTunes XML files, wouldn't it be interesting if a very large number of iTunes users started to upload their data? With a large pool of data, you'd be able to generate some interesting statistics on which songs, artists, or genres are most popular, or how songs are being rated based across a large user base.

Nope, I just checked it out quickly. Looks quite well-developed. The only other service I'd heard of like this before was Pandora.com, which is significantly different enough that I felt it didn't belong in the post.

This has been done before:

It is an interesting experiment, and I did discover a lot of new music. Pandora was nice, but it costs money. I liked their streaming radio, but Pandora is really a different animal from audioscrobbler.
The nice thing about the audioscrobbler plugin is that the user doesn't need to do anything- stats are generated automatically.

What about seeing the statistical data directly from iTunes? "Top 10 list", etc?

I think your link has led to an overwhelming day for them... it's taken a few hours to get to about 2500 on the upload...

The iTunes registry has been around for a good while now. The only trouble is, it seems to be run on a pretty low-end server, and it can't cope with more than forty database connections at once. Whenever I try to upload my library file, there always seem to be too many users. It's a very good idea, but their implementation isn't scaling very well.
