Firefox 1.5 available

firefoxFirefox 1.5 is available for download. No beta, no release candidate...this is the real thing. I've only been using it briefly, but it certainly seems very snappy to me. Changes in this release include:

  • Drag and drop tab reordering (yes!)
  • Speedier performance
  • Automated update enhancements
There's more, of course. Get the full list of changes here. Note that Firefox (and Thunderbird) now resides at Mozilla.com, not Mozilla.org. Now go and grab your copy.

Strangely enough, my copy of Firefox which is a few weeks old, is up-to-date.

One of the cool new features is that Firefox now seamlessly imports all of your Safari stuff. You can choose what you want to import (prefs, cookies, bookmarks, history). My Safari bookmarks are finally synced with Firefox. (I prefer Safari over Firefox, but Firefox is useful for web development troubleshooting). Also, if you're having problems downloading, try this link and select your language/OS... http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html It seems the web server they were using last night wasn't configured correctly. My guess is they didn't have the MIME type configured correctly for .dmg files. It seems to be working now, but just in case, try the link above if needed.

I see mycroft.mozdev.org is down, presumably because of heavy load. Perhaps it would still be up if the installer hadn't nuked everyone's searchplugins directories? (Yes, I'm angry - a simple rename of the existing directory to searchplugins.old would have saved a great deal of hassle. Especially for people who had custom plugins that aren't on mycroft...)

galmeida, it works so that you don't have to configure any firefox settings? i was wondering that if i update my firefox, will it retain those settings or do i have to go through and edit them again... but if you're saying the two-finger horizontal scroll works then does that mean it's set that way by default?

Very nice. Safari seems to be falling behind. My biggest complaint is the completely brain-dead popup-blocking mechanism that Safari seems to have - its all or nothing. Its high time AAPL did something about this annoyance.

Great news, been waiting for this for a while. Just installed it on the PC, very smooth, even told me what extensions needed updating, and did it for me! Chris http://amateureconblog.blogspot.com/

It's strange, but I cannot download the new version for mac. Everytime I do I get a gigantic text file directly in the browser. I wonder if the demand is too great, but I can download the PC version, so I'm not sure.
