Help Dori Smith get her System alerts back
Check out this
post over at Backup Brain. Dori Smith is
having a very odd problem where her System Alerts aren't playing, although every other sound on her computer sings like
a charm. It's like a troubleshooter's puzzle for the holidays. She even posted a Flickr set of her settings to serve as clues. Checking in
on the comments reveals a
few helpful suggestions like playing with the MIDI settings and zapping the PRAM, but no word on whether any of that has
helped yet or not.For those of you who are about to flame this post, asking, "Why is this on TUAW?" The answer: Because I needed to get a post up by 12:30, I like Dori's blog, and it actually stumped me and I thought the phrasing of the whole thing was very mind-bender puzzle-esque. :-b

So the solution was a reboot? This person actually asked for help on the internet before trying a reboot? And it got posted on TUAW? Lame and lame.
I'd probably be less annoyed if I weren't stuck on this 56k connection, but still, this has to be the lamest post ever, anywhere.
As a sysadmin and consummate troubleshooter, I am deeply offended. What a waste of time and webspace.
Hi guys!
I'm having similar problems on my iMac G5 20". Suddenly Entourage, Flash player (standalone and safari plug-in) and Quicktime doesn't sound any more, tottaly muted!!! I have no idea what happened. Please help!! Other apps sound normally, adium, itunes and system alerts too.
Please help!!!
Leo.
For those who don't want to read through the whole thing: it's fixed now.
I've been having the same problem since I upgraded to Tiger. No help from Apple's online discussions. At least I'm not the only one........

One thing I do remember, but as she has played with the MIDI settings it is like she is ahead of me here, is to make sure that the speakers are set to the right frequency , so it should be 44 100 Hz (I think)
Sk8rCai, I'll take that bet. You didn't read my writeup, did you?
CK, thanks for sending people my way. No solution as yet, but I appreciate all the help.
10-1 the sound file is actually silence!!
hehehe
I think it belongs on TUAW, because it's neat, fun, Mac-related, and who knows, someone may be having a similar problem. Good job.
