VP Dick Cheney was flying home from Baghdad last week with his iPod, when most of the
outlets on Air Force II went out. The plane was filled with reporters, all lining up to charge their laptops at the few
working outlets so they could get their stories ready for transmission during an upcoming refueling stop. Wouldn't you
know it -- Dick Cheney's iPod needed charging at the same time. News stories or no news stories, Cheney's music took
precedence. The
Associated
Press reported that Cheney's iPod "dominated one precious outlet for several hours." Granted, a press
aide did allow a reporter to use the outlet to charge a dead laptop for 15 minutes, but then the iPod went right back
into the outlet. After all, Dick needs his tunes.

That's part of why I have a simple extension cord with 3 outlets in my notebook bag. (the other is the number of outlets and their location in hotels) At the airport outlets can be tough to find. A free one is often very rare. If the receptacle near the gate is taken, I just ask if we can share the outlet using an extension cord. Always works. They lose 10 secs of charging up time, if that. And, I of course gladly share with more people. We're all in the same boat, looking for some power for our tech stuff, so why not share.

What do these road warriors use for brains? You mean to say that not a one of them carried either an exteension cord with extra outlets or an outlet multiplier? As a former tech supporter on the road 50% of the time, those things (among other stuff) were in my little bag of tools. These guys should know that outlets can be rare not only on government jets, but also anywhere public. They have no one to blame but themselves!
