iPod second greatest gadget of the past 50 years

The iPod has been named the second greatest gadget of the past 50 years by the editors of PC Magazine. The Sony Walkman, which is an obvious inspiration for the iPod, took the number one spot.

PC Magazine does take a moment to call the first generation iPods 'nothing special,' and notes that it was with support for the PC and higher capacity drives that iPod sales took off.

When did you get your first iPod? I had the second edition of the first gen iPods which sported a massive 10 gig drive and were Mac only (sorry PC folks!).

Original 5gb iPod, purchased December 2001

The original battery worked until this year, when it was replaced with a newer tech 20hr battery. My antique iPod still works great. :-)

iPod Mini. It's pink. It was my Christmas present to myself last year. :)

I'm a latecomer to the Apple world. I remember first thinking that the iPods were really overpriced when the 1st Gen model came out on the market. However, when I compare my mini to my old RCA MP3 player, there is no comparison. Even the iPod shuffle is easier to use--I have one of those too. :D

I used my original 1G 5 gig brick of an ipod up until this christmas when I got a new 5G 60 gig in black. It's totally sweet, except for it's usb 2.0 dock connector. My 3 year old powerbook doesn't have usb 2, so it takes forever to upload stuff. Anyway, aside from the battery life dwindling down to almost nothing, I never had any problems with my first ipod, and used it through college to store all my projects and stuff. Much less likely to crap out than a zip disk...

So, for a product to be special, it *has* to support the PC?!

Mass market at that stage, certainly, but the iPod was something special right out of the gate, only it took time for people (including an alarming number of otherwise open-minded Mac people) to "get" just how good the sync'n'go solution was.

My 'pods:
1st gen 5GB
3rd gen 30GB
4th gen 60GB photo
5th gen 60GB video, and as of a week ago:
4GB nano + lanyard headphones that I"m only allowed to use at the gym - to encourage me to go!

My first iPod was the 2G 20 GB model, for PC. I didn't start buying Macs until the next year. Halo effect, or something like that. That damn iPod was $550, and barely lasted more than a year! I'm surprised I still buy Apple products, but now I have a 40 GB iPod photo, a 20" iMac and a 12" iBook, and I'm happy with them all. I guess that first iPod was just a clunker.

You know, I understand how they'd make the Walkman #1, but I think it's more of a sympathy vote. If someone would have told me 50 years ago that there would be a portable device that played 10-15 song cassette tapes, or a portable device that could play your entire music library, I would obviously think the latter would be absolutely amazing.

That's just me, though.

My first iPod was the 15GB 3rd gen. I remember being amazed when I opened the box and first put the iPod into my hand -- something I haven't felt with any of the other iPods I've owned except for the Nano.

My first iPod was a 20gb 2G. Mac only but at that time they had already started selling PeeCee versions.

Second iPod was a 1GB shuffle with a 40GB 4G coming soon after that. I killed the hdd on that recently and I'm now back to using the 2G.

THat was after about 2 months of savings and i got lucky cause that was only a few weeks after they came out with the 20gb. Hahah i got it when having an ipod was the nerdy thing to have and not the kool thing.
