Iomega MiniMax

File this under, 'Iomega is still in business?' They have recently released the Iomega MiniMax which is a USB 2.0/Firewire hard drive that comes in either 160 (which goes for $200) or 250 gig (for $250) models. The drives are meant as companions to your Mac mini, just rest the mini on top and you're ready to go.

Brief iomega history:
did pretty well with Bernoulli cartridges in the early 90's
got their lunch eaten by SyQuest for a while, then...
ate SyQuest's lunch when they introduced the Zip drive (~1996)
they also did OK with Jaz drives, but then...
they got their lunch eaten again once CD burners became popular and media became cheap.
Now they're a pretty generic storage company--burners, HDs, etc. Nothing unique or compelling, not like they used to be.

I think (could be wrong) the joke was more related to the fact that Iomega was popular for a long time because of its zip drives, which have long since fallen out of popularity.

Iomega is simply a company that has its ups and downs riding the wave of technology changes in removable storage media, having its golden ages and its dark ages; it has had the golden ring in its grasp only to let it slip out again, on numerous occasions. Some of the failures have hurt its reputation, and eventually one may not recover from a fumble. Not every Grady or Abe Vigoda has its Conan O'Brian.

I was thinking of buying an Iomega drive, should I second guess that idea? Are their products bad?

LOL. i got one of these for christmas... but it wasn't an iomega. it was a NuTech. i think my wife got it from Otherworld Computing (macsales.com)

Looks like iomega is buying this from the same supplier in Taiwan since it looks exactly the same. (down the the little hdd activity light).

P.S. my enclosure came with a 250gb drive! yeah! :)
