Apple's latest iPod updater showed up in Software Update last night
when some of us were out open-bar hopping. iPod Updater 2006-01-10 is recommended for all iPods, but specifically delivers:
iPod Software 1.1 for iPod
iPod Software 1.1 for iPod nano
iPod Software 1.2.1 for iPod with color display
iPod Software 1.4.1 for iPod mini
iPod Software 3.1.1 for iPod with Click Wheel
For all other iPod models, iPod Updater 2006-01-10 contains the same software versions as iPod Updater 2005-11-17.
Features of iPod Software 1.1 for iPod, and iPod Software 1.1 for iPod nano include support for the iPod Radio Remote and unnamed bug fixes, while changes to iPod Software 1.2.1 for iPod with color display, iPod Software 1.4.1 for iPod mini, whileiPod Software 3.1.1 for iPod with Click Wheel includes only bug fixes.

With the new iPods being shipped without power adapters, after the initial firmware upload, will the iPod accept being plugged into a computer rather than the previous requirement of being plugged into the wall (to finish the firmware flash).

#1: the new video ipods do not require a plug-in to a wall in order to start. only a computer is required.

Anyone else with a 3G iPod that no longer works with Firewire? Mine hangs up every single time I try to use Firewire (but it's ok with USB). Sorry, just a random question. Maybe this update will fix the issue.

My 5g 60gb iPod seems to be running ALOT nicer, not laggy as hell as it was out of the box.

I agree with Peter, my 30GB 5G is a lot quicker, the update allows compatibilty for the new accescories (i.e. the Radio thingy) check out Main Menu in the settings page...
Would be a cool upgrade if something visible happend :P Like the wonderful update all those years ago that made the 1-3 Gens have 4Galike software :D
NB I'm guessing the radio thingy only happens on the 5G and Nano, but I don't have a 4G etc, so I can't test it...

Best part of the update is the album art view mods.
When you select the album art view during playback it stays on screen until you dismiss it (Note: this is the case on my nano, but not my 4G photo).
Also, when listening to a podcast with mutliple images embedded within (i.e. CBCRadio3), the images update as you play the file. This works on both my iPods. This is especially cool in that "locked" album art view on the nano (presume this would be the case on the newfangled video 'pod too)

Has the nano started to work properly on the Alpine car integration kit yet, without locking up or automatically chahanging the EQ settings?

We had hoped for a bit more than the simple bug fixes hopefully this is a stepping stone for a further update soon. :)

update disables hold menu button down to activate/turn off backlight
It did this to both my brand new nano and 5th generations ipods that i bought last week. i dont like the touch the wheel and the backlight comes on for set number of seconds. so i always do the click and hold to turn it on when i need it
so i updated both and later that day discovered my backlight doesn't turn on on my 5th gen when i hold the button . so i grabbed the nano and same thing
can other people check to see if they have the same problem. i'm guessing a lot of people have the backlight set to come on for x seconds and havent noticed this.go to settiongs - backlight - turn it off. then hold the menu to see if it comes on and stays on
cheers
simon
who would i report this to at apple ?

Simon, my 5G iPod also lost the Menu-Backlight Function through the new update. I had my iPod set to "Always On", so that when I was just listening to music, I would hold Menu and the backlight would turn off (to save battery). Always On can be thought of as Always On/Always Off with the toggle being to hold the Menu button. And watching videos was never a problem because it would always be on, and when I finished, I could change it to always off. This function is now taken away and I have to now put "Backlight" on my main menu. This is still difficult to find though since it isn't the last item on the main menu. It goes above Now Playing (and I think some other options), making it harder to find when my backlight's off. I wish Apple would at least make this an option, since some people are happier with the new option: holding the menu button will now instantly bring you back to the main menu.

The updater is taking a long time for me. Its already been over 2 hours and I can't detect any progress. Does anyone have advice for me. Should I restart my computer and try again or sould I wait a bit longer?
Thanks

I found a feedback site for all the 5G iPod people having irritations with the backlight menu hold thing.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
I have complained! Thanks for giving me a reason to search for it :P :D
