UK Government: Free iPods for all!

Well, not really. Government officials in the UK are getting serious about combating online fraud and identity issues. There is a proposal for an ID card system, which would store a person's online identity. The cost of the cards would be high, and Patrick Cooper, head of applications and data services at the UK Department of Trade and Industry, has proposed replacing the ID cards with iPod nanos, according to an article on ZD Net UK. From the article:

"If you had...an iPod with a digital certificate [it] would also work...My boss would give everyone in the UK an iPod...that would also mean there would be no reason for anyone to steal one because everyone would have one." Sounds like a plan to me!

I case of my eID I think it has kind of a unique serial number embedded in the card which you can register if stolen so the card is automatically blocked when trying to use it to access the databases with your personal information and to use my eID card I have to enter a PIN number. So every electronic ID card or ID-Nano iPod is more secure compared to a paper version ID because you can block it. If someone steals your paper ID they can misuse it with no way to block it from further misuse.

Is he stupid? That'll give the thugs even MORE reason to steal your iPod! If your iPod is your ID, and it's trusted 100% then they become even more attractive to the criminal element as it affords them another way to conceal themselves. Sure, you can report your iPod stolen, but meanwhile the crook who took it has access to whatever information he can get with your ID, which will probably include health care access as well as your bank account(s) and credit cards. Brilliant! Where do I sign up?

Nice idea.
I'm from Belgium and here the Gov. is already deploying an electronic ID card with build in chip which contains your digital certificate. It's great, you can use it to do e-government: to do your taxes online, order official documents send certified letters by email, and there are special chat rooms for kids with an age limit verified by using your eID so they can block access for dirty old men and pedophiles.
Although it would be nice if i could have all that in an iPod nano.

#3 Well don't come over here then... you can't do anything, get on a plane, buy beer, buy stuff with a credit card, without a drivers license. It's insane.

On January 24th Apple Computer and Her Majesty's Government will introduce the Mandatory iPod.
And you'll see why 2006 *will* be like "1984."
