Disable and stop the Dashboard
Here is
a great video podcast [link]
that demonstrates several ways to either stop or disable the Dashboard. The author demonstrates both getting the job
done via the Terminal as well as with a couple of double-clickable utilities he has written. It's a well done
screencast and quite informative. Check it out.

I also - accidentally - clicked on Remove From Dock on the pulldown(or in this case up) icon menu. (I noticed it was unusual in that it didn't have a "quit" option though).
Now I can't figure out how to get it back on the dock. Seriously, it's so weird. I know there are three or four other ways to activate it, but I really like the shiny black dial thingie on my dock. Hayulp! Thanks.
I too disabled it a long time ago. I'm a Konfabulator man. (Yes, Konfabulator, not that stupid "Yahoo! Widget Engine" crap name.)

Like George said:
1. Remove the Dashboard icon from the Dock.
2. Go into system preference, and change the Dashboard key from F12 to none
3. Reboot.
From this point, Dashboard will use Zero CPU cycle and Zero memory, end of story...
I love the Mandarin Chinese TV show audio playing in the background of this video podcast! So 21st century.

Dashboard will not be enabled or take your CPU cycles and system RAM until it is opened, so the best thing to do is to drag Dashboard icon off the Dock and forget about it.
Next time your Mac boots just be careful enough not to press F12 so be happy. Still, Dashboard is great and I can't think of a reason why you really want it disabled at all.
By the way I haven't checked the vodcast because I knew about it months ago, so sorry if I'm repeating things.
Right, install the preference pane and be forced to reinstall Tiger to restore functionality... (I had a bad e'sperience) Doing it manually like this is a lot easier, and you actually see what you're doing, regardless of how much you understand it.
