Cringley's crystal ball
Robert X. Cringely wraps each year with a set of tech predictions for the year ahead. Last year he was a bit off his game, but that hasn't
stopped him from taking a stab at what lies ahead for a variety of tech players in 2006. His top three predictions
involve Apple and are intriguing to say the least. For instance, he sees a Terabyte of download capacity for .Mac users
(for real this time), iMacs sporting huge plasma displays for screens, and major inroads against Microsoft and in the
internet video arena. Check out The Pulpit for a
full run down and chime in below with a few of your own predictions!

This was pointed out on a certain Linux-loving site by a reader and I thought I should pass it along to my Mac brethren. Cringley is a lier and a fraud: http://daily.stanford.org/Daily98-99/11-11-1998/news/tempo?page=content&id=4462&repository=0001_article

1. Tech pundits will continue to flog technologies that they don't understand to people who don't care.
2. Apple's users will continue to be armchair generals who think they know everything Apple should do to vanquish the dreaded Beast of Redmond even though they really haven't got a clue. If these people were actually in charge of Apple the company would fold within a year. Yes, this includes me.
3. Vista will ship before it's ready, be riddled with security flaws and bugs and it will STILL outsell MacOS X.
I think that's enough. Don't you? :)
Apple will develop a version of iChat that will run on Windows to help promote a national video telephone service (all new Mac Laptops and iMacs already come with built-in video). Next they will develop an all in one PDA/Video Cell Phone and iPod to take advantage of they're early entry into this technology and usurp they're competition the same way they did to win dominance with the iPod.

As long as we're making baseless predictions that we can just ignore when we're completely wrong....
1) Apple will buy Burst. Not only to circumvent any licensing problems but to eventually control the market. Therefore, even if Google, Yahoo, AOL, or MS succeed, Apple profits.
2) Apple will buy TiVo as well. People have been saying this for years, so nobody will care if I was wrong. TiVo has quite a bit of IP that Apple could leverage to overtake MS in the media center market. But TiVo also provides an interesting attachment to cable provider Comcast.
3) Hackers will get OS X to run on "dull little boxes" but only hackers will really care.... and the media that will make a big deal about nothing. Mom and Dad and Grandma will either continue to use their increasingly crippled Windows machine or somebody will take heart and buy them a Mac.
