Apple Matters' first look at iWeb

James R. Stoup over at Apple Matters has a first-look review of iWeb that is probably worth checking out if you are curious about the product, but not yet willing to shell out the dough for the new iLife '06. I particularly like the "What iWeb isn't" section: "iWeb is NOT a general purpose website creation application. Do not make the mistake of thinking it is a scaled down version of Dreamweaver, as it most definitely is not. This application is designed to publish personal websites either to .Mac or to a folder to be used via another hosting service. It does nothing else."

Check it out.

Wow, you weren't kidding when you said SLOW. I checked out the website that your created with iWeb. It looked good, but it was very slow, and I have a very fast connection. Most people I know have the low end DSL, and it's just annoying having to wait that long.

Here's the thing about iWeb that I've noticed NOBODY has mentioned. I got my copy about 3 days ago and have been playing with iWeb consistantly since. And I find 3 major drawbacks that I haven't seen anybody mention yet.
First: You can't save the file as an iWeb document in order to transfer it between computers if need be. I have my iLife installed on both my laptop and my G5 and if I want to work on a site on iWeb that I started on my G5 I can't transport it over to my laptop. That sucks.
Second: A blog to me has no real value if you really aren't able to update it anytime. This is what makes blogger and Wordpress better in my opinion for real blogging, because I can open them in any web browser on any computer and post. And what sucks about that is because I really REALLY like Apple's integrated RSS and the way they deal with pictures and stuff on their blog templates.
And Thirdly: I posted the site I made with iWeb here (http://web.mac.com/lboyce82/iWeb) and I used the freestyle template which I thought was the nicest looking, and let me tell you....it is SLOOWWWWWW!!!! And I have a fairly fast cable connection and it felt like dial-up trying to open this site up. Now, I don't know about anybody else but when I go to someone's blog page, if I'm waiting MINUTES for it to show up than I'm not interested anymore. A blog has to be quick and Apple's fancier templates with their .mac service is just....ehhh.

I'm loving the new iPhoto - very fast and great full screen editing mode. iWeb doesn't do it for me but will make a great replacement for the old web based .mac publishing tools.
