PC Mag likes new Intel iMacs

C.K. seems to like his new Intel based iMac (there really should be a better way of describing the Intel based Macs without having to use 'Mactel'), but what about the editors of PC Magazine? They have made it an 'Editors' Choice' and given it four and a half circle thingies. Why does this 20 inch iMac (that's the model they got their hands on) deserve such praise?

It is fast, at least with Universal applications, and the iMac form factor is very good (Jobs even called it 'perfect,' though I don't think I would go that far). The reviewer at PC Mag only had two complaints about the iMac, and they really aren't iMac specific:
  • Classic is no longer supported on the Intel Macs
  • Running applications in Rosetta is slow
He recommends this system to 'casual Mac users,' but since the Pro apps aren't universal yet he warns off video and Photoshop jockies.

Name suggestion: iMac Duo.

And for those who hate the name "MacBook Pro" (and, after having dropped 1,700 on a new one, I'm going to have to force myself to like it!), how about PowerBook Duo?

The advantages? It's short, simple, doesn't sound too stupid and actually describes what's inside. They're also disposable. Once Apple finish the move over to Intel, we can simply drop the "Duo" and refer to them as iMacs, PowerBooks and the such like.

With the monitor spanning now fully supported, I am going to get one of these new iMacs soon. Maybe I'll wait until more universal apps are released, or Amazon has one of their rebates.

I was calling them the IBMs (Intel-Based Macs). And I was hoping that during the Stevenote that Jobs would say "now we have to talk about one more thing..." and the letters "IBM" would pop up on the screen. And then it would morph into "Intel-Based Macs" just to screw with those IBM bastards. But nooooooo.

Anyway, the best alter-name I've seen so far was a variation on that theme, the "ICBMs." Or, Intel Chip-Based Macs.

Cheers,
FL

Yeah, the iMac Flat Panel (w/ dome) does look nicer then the current design of the mac.

But, in this world if your design doesn't change then you're labeled as stagnant, which is something that Apple never wants to be called.

For the name I prefer to call it a Intel iMac (rolls off the tongue easily enough).

Why not "MacIntel"? Pronounced like "Macintosh" with the stress on the "Mac", and "Intel" pronounced exactly the same as the company. I've seen it used before, and in my opinion it's far better than "Mactel".

Try it. It just rolls off the tongue.

Yes, MacTel is a bad moniker, it sounds too much like Mattel, the toy company.

I'd like to think that one day, Mac processors will be provided by "iNTEL". a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple.

Piotr,

Yea, definitely not perfect.. could use some changes. I like some of those you mentioned.

Still, I like the incarnation of the iMac that they used to have before the current one:

It
was great, thin-panel display and you could adjust it almost any way you wanted it. Looks and feels clean and transparent. Unlike this iMac with a huge lower bezel.

So, when do folks think the Intel Mac mini will arrive and which processor will it have? I'm hoping soon and I'd bet the mini gets a scaled down version of the Duo. We'll see...
